On a R-15 to cover up that ugly camo? Black, but what kind to use? I have the rifle stripped right down. It will have to stand up to repeated oiling and be durable of course. Tremclad,Krylon...? I will apply primer then the black paint. Thanks in advance.

Get it dura-coated. Dura coat is epoxy based, and cures stronger than any other paint I've used.

Even BBQ paint doesn't stand up to Dura-coat (other than heat). I used flux stripper (alcohol based degreser and solvent) to try and get it off, and it would work. Even stood up against gel-paint removed pretty good.

It is a restricted Ar15, not a good idea.

Not a problem if he gets his ATT and is within a reasonable distance to it while it is being worked on. Or if the painter has his PAL for restricted he doesn't even need to be there, just drop it (and the registration) off with the painter and pick it up when done. Still needs the ATT to bring it there and back. This is done all the time when taking restricteds in for powder coating etc.. Which is another option for him. So is a different type of overlayed coated finish like it came with. I rather like the original finish of the R-15, R-25. If I didn't like the finish I probably wouldn't have bought then and would have went with some other choices. The last colour I would paint/refinish one would be black, just like every other one out there, at least the R-15 is different when sitting on the rack at the match. I think one done in a matte chrome with those nifty walnut wood furniture kits from DPMS would be awesome.
