Hey guys. My grandfather had a Colt Officer's Special handgun in .38 Special for many years and about a year or two ago sold it to a local guy. I didn't realize he wanted to get rid of it otherwise I would have bought it from him. However I just talked to the guy who bought it and explained how much it means to me and he agreed to sell it back to me. He lives a number of hours away so I will get together with him in the next month or so and arrange for the transfer of registration. What I'm not sure of is the ATT and such. Having never owned a handgun before this is uncharted water for me. Do I need to apply for the ATT after the transfer of registration? Can it be on the same day as the transfer? Basically I want to drive up there, transfer it, get the ATT and come back on the same day. Is that possible? Thanks.

An ATT can't be issued before the transfer is approved. Why not do the transfer now, and pick it up later? Or, do the transfer now, and have the revolver mailed to you. I may be wrong, but I suspect that the transfer for acquisition of a first pistol isn't going to happen while you wait, even in Alberta.

Yep, restricted PAL is already done. Got that when there were rumblings of outlawing handguns. Who do I call to get an ATT? I might call them and see what they recommend as the best way to go about it. The handgun is also in Saskatchewan so do I need a special ATT for that? If I transfer the registration and he mails it to me I don't need an ATT to get it home, just to take it to the gun range right?

Correct, sort of. Technically, if you go to the post office to pick it up you need the ATT, but as most of us are not equipped with X ray vision, and don't actually know what's at the post office until we get there, that part usually gets ignored. Get the transfer done, have him mail it to you, and go from there. - dan

Are there any restrictions on who will mail it? Canada Post?

Anyone have pictures of a Colt Officer's Special? It's been a while since I have seen the gun.

Usually the ATT for transport is automatically applied for and sent when you do the transfer of the firearm.

Shipping is best via Expresspost (mail) with insurance, and signature required. (This is the CFC officially sanctioned carrier these days.)
