I am getting ready to get back into reloading, and I was thinking of a new press, progressive if possible.I currently have a RCBS 4X4 which is manuel indexing. In talking to a few reloaders in this area I have come up with a couple that have been suggested. the LNL AP by Hornaday and the Dillon 550 or 650.The big Question I have is this,I could get by with what I have,or get one of the 2 above.I know what the basic cost will be with the LNL but I am having difficulty getting a base line price on the Dillon what with adapters plates etc for what I want to reload.Has anyone gotten them selfs set up with the Dillon el650 for example with say .38/357,44 mag, .308, 30-06,.300win and maybe a couple more at a later date.I am getting ready to retire in the next couple of years and want to get set up while still earning a reasonable income.any suggestions etc? Thanks

I have a Dillon RL 650 B. I wouldnt trade it for the world, as I absolutely love it. I can do .45 ACP, 9mm Para, .38/.357 and .223. I got mine from Kelly at Phoenix Arms in Edmonton. He won't steer you wrong. Pm me if you want some more details. If you're in the Edmonton area and wanna take a look, just let me know.

on 1, naturally you can "get by" on what you have. If you shoot a lot (100+ rounds/week) and don't want to spent a lot of time reloading, you'll be happier with the LNL AP or Dillon 650.

on 2, cost is available on the Dillon website. You can also call and get an apples-to-apples BOM to compare to your pricing on the LNL AP.

on general comments, you can read my infamous writeup on the three major progressive presses here:

It will give you a better idea of the pros and cons on the two you're interested in.

I have a Dillion 650XL and I like it a lot. Although I have nothing to compared or even played with another press before. Loaded over 5k of 9mm so far.

That said, if you go for 650 instead of 550, get the case feeder otherwise the 650 is really just a 550 minus the auto indexing.

My 650 is currently setup for 9mm, but I'm going to get it running for 223. I was all geared up ready to buy 223 dies and rifle case feeder plate but I put that on hold. My 9mm is currently tuned and it takes for ever to hone it in. So I'm gong to buy another complete set of parts for 223 including powder dump so that I don't need to tune anything.

It's going to be a pain for 44 mag too due to large pistol primers. Need another set for that.

Big bucks add up quick for convenience for Dillon, so I'm in no hurry. Still having fun shooting 9mm and sometimes SKS... My Norc M4 can wait a bit longer. Poor thing only ate ~40rds and my friend who is RCMP shot half of it. lol

want to thank everyone for their input, acrasb your write up was a big help, good job on that by the way,So I ordered the lnl today from frontier. It seems to be all that I am looking for and is the same basic operation as my RCBS 4X4 Thanks again
