what rifle to start them off with?

If hunting is forecast and not a lot of training is in store; single shot all the way. Nothing is as simple as keeping an action open until game are near, and opening it after they're shot or gone. For someone who is a fast learner or who has more time to practice making safe: an easy to use bolt or lever (30-30, .303, etc)

I agree 100% and this was a big part of the reason for getting my son into the 30-30 T/C Contender carbine first I even only gave him one bullet at a time when he was first starting to shoot.

He then moved up to carrying the rifle with the action open/empty and all the bullets that he could stuff in his pocket. His next step was to carry action open and one in the chamber.

Safety was the biggest thing that I kept banging into his head then shooting skills.

Crazy thing was after all of the training he did he shot his first deer at about 15 yards and almost missed it cause he hit so high took out the spine though and it dropped instantly, his next big game animal was the biggest black bear that I had ever seen perfect broad side heart shot @ 120 yards without a rest yup proud of my son...
