Hi all, I have a newbie question. This is what my receiver looks like, is this standard? It looks like I can either side mount or top mount. I'd like to be able to keep the Central aluminum block in place, but it could be shifted somewhat or removed. Any suggestions as to brands/suppliers?

That aluminum block and dovetail rail on the side is the mount for the rear Iron sights. That is something you would see on a target rifle. You probably have some sort of dovetail front sight on the barrel as well....................

You would not mount a scope on that block or rail.

The top of the reciever is drilled for a base.

Just need to know the make of the rifle inorder to find a base to fit.

SKBY.

There do not appear to be any other holes drilled on the side of the receiver...therefore a side mount is not practical - it would require cutting away some of your stock, drilling and tapping holes and finding a solid enough side mount ...there are not a lot made for tubular receivers these days. Mounting a scope to the iron sight base alone will not provide sufficient stability for it.

The action is drilled for top mounted bases. You would have to measure the centre to centre hole spacing and find bases designed to fit the spacing and the radius of your action...or close enough to the radius that you can bed them properly to fit with Devcon.

Whoever made the action or drilled and presumably tapped the action holes shown should be able to tell you what base they are set up for... and what size thread screws... good luck ... what is the action- ??.... I have seen this action before but can't place it - getting old .. Swing, Paramount, Grunig??

Interesting - I do not recognize the make of receiver. What make is it? As you are aware, the mounting block is for a Central pattern aperture sight.
Your receiver is drilled and tapped for scope mounting bases. As mentionned, you will have to find bases that can be mounted using these holes. I suspect that you will be able to find Weaver pattern bases that would work. Might be necessary to drill an additional mounting hole in each Weaver base, if you cannot find anything to match the hole spacing, but that is no big deal. If you use Weaver pattern bases, I would suggest using Burris Signature Zee rings to mount the scope.

The above post contains zero information.

It was delightfully vague, wasn't it? Sorry about that, a problem well stated is a problem half solved, and I left you at square one, didn't I?

AP, good call- it is a Grunig, in .308. And thanks tiriaq, I'll follow up on your suggestion. The reason I asked is that a recent post here got me thinking that my eyes aren't what they used to be, and that just maybe, a scope is the way for me to go to get into the longer range stuff. The Central sight I use is good enough that I can consistently hit the gong at 375 yds, (as long as it's freshly painted day-glo) but at that distance, the approx 18X24" gong is just a dot.
So I started thinking scopes, but I know zip about them, and the grooves on the receiver side wall that the Central sight base mounts to had me wondering if that was a possible side mount location for a scope. Good to know I can top mount.
I know it's a good rifle and deserves a good scope, but paying for one could get interesting... might have to sell something, lol.

Anyway, it's all new to me, and I'm looking forward to learning more.

As the reciever is round and already tapped for mounting, might I recommend a Savage "Weaver" base. If the holes are in the right place tis might work best. Weaver bases for the Savage round reciever are $6.00 per base so no loss if it doesn't work or you could simply take the rifle with you when you go to buy the bases and check the hole spacing.
