Want a scope for my new Savage 17 HMR. Don't want to spend a ton of money but want a good value scope. Who makes a good target/plinking/hunting scope with a fine crosshair and isn't too big of a scope. I don't want an 18 oz scope as the gun is already 7 pounds. Are the BSA Sweet 17's any good, or any others? Any advice would be appreciated.

Good quality but you get what you pay for

Schmidt and Bender - Short Dot Scope

About $2500

You're joking right? The dude just said he didn't want to spend a load of money and you suggest a $2500 scope?....

Anyways, I love .17HMR and think something variable up to 10x is just what the doctor ordered. I've heard many good things about various middle of the road scopes, but personally I think a fine shooter like Savage deserves a Leupold with fine duplex... not cheap, but over a grand less than cereal83 suggested :p

Good question. The Sweet .17 I had was decent enough, but I'd suggest going a little higher end and look at the Muellers. I've heard good things about these scopes.
Also, don't forget to consider used. Look around for an old Tasco target...but make SURE it's marked "Made in Japan". The Jap. Tasco scopes were really good for the money.

He said he wanted quality

I would go with maybe a Bushnell Banner or a Bushnell 3200 40x10 with mildot reticle and if you have the extra money, maybe go leupold with a long range hunting reticle.

It's A 17HMR

Art wants a goood scope for hunting and target. since the 17HMR is not going to kill past 200 Meters I would look at the bushnell 3200 in 4-12X40 or even a used B&L 4000 in 4-16X40
Art. You know as well as I, that cheaping out on a scope is not a good thing. Lots of good deals on scopes on this forum. Just keep your eyes open and be ready to pounce when the deal comes up.

Surely to god man you're not implying a Banner is a "quality" scope.....?

I would take an old Jap Tasco over even the 3200's...there's a reason these older scopes bring stupid money.

As far as the Meuller...try and find a bad review. Great Scope for the $$.

What about a Mueller APV? They seem to be getting really good reviews over at rimfirecentral. Not in the Leupold or Schmidt and Bender class, but seem good for a rimfire rifle... Can't say a personal opinion as I have not received mine yet. :D

Scope

I have a 5-15 on my .17 CZ you might want to look at the Trophy 4-12x40 AO a mere $229 at Wholesale, this would suit your need very well.FS
