Hi,
Getting into my first long range rifle.
I think to start I will look at the Savage 10FCP in .308, Most shooting would be under 1000 yds, as limited on range distance in my area.
what would be the best recommened scope for this distance, without selling my house? haha!
Any input from long range pros would be most appreciated.
Tks Alot

You have to watch when buying scopes off of flee-Bay. There are a lot of Leuopold, Bushnell, AimPoint, and eoTech knockoffs out there and some sellers either don't know what they are selling or they aren't honest enough to tell you it's a knock off.

My experience is limited to 300 yard shooting so keep that in mind, but....
If you're shooting 1000 yards for groups (as opposed to reducing your target size to simulate shooting 1000 yards or just hitting plates at 1000), then definately save up and invest in a brand name like NightForce or Leupold. At anything above 24x magnification, you need the best quality glass out there. IMO, the bushnell elite 4200 optics are marginal at 24x.

I think the best scope to buy for any long distance 1000+ yards is the Leupold Mark IV 8.5-25 or even the 6.5-20 would be great scopes, any dealer carry's these, and if they do not have them in they should be able to special order them.

How much do you want to spend, and are you doing it competitively or for fun? if fun, lots of guys get good results from the Bushnell 3200 at a fraction of the high-end scope costs.

Very good optics and mechanicals can be had in the Elite 4200 and 6500 line up for substantially less money then the NF/leupold clan. Nikon is another excellent brand and their Monarch X (new tactical line) will give a mk4 a very hard time for optics and mechanicals for about 1/2 the price.

Just snoop on 'sniper' sites in the US for reviews.

I have used many Elite 4200s. Their new tactical 30mm scope will do all you want for around $650-700. Has 45mins of up so will take a 308 easily from 100 to 1000yds using Burris rings and/or a canted base. The mildots are really nice and the side focus works very well.

You loose just a hint of resolution at 24X (the same as a VXIII) but still enough to see bullet impacts at 1 mile with a 223 off a rock. I bet that is plenty for most shooters.

Not to go off topic but....where do you plan on getting your hands on the 10FCP? I've been looking for months with no luck. (I'm looking for the McMillan one)
