i bought a rem 700 vtr, now i need to decide what kind of scope to put on it, looking to spend between 800 to 1200 might spend more if get more bang for my buck but.

I am looking at getting into some long range varmint hunting and punching paper, i would like a scope that i could shoot at gofars at 4 to 500yrds or atleast give me a fighting chance, want to know what everyone thinks?
curious about what recticles, and magnification work best at this type of distance and what features some scopes have that are beneficial at shooting at these ranges, so i know what to look for.

thanks for your time, and look forward to reading what you have to say.

So you wouldn't recommend needing magnification varuable as high as 24. Magnification to 16 or to 14 would do the job fine for what i want to use the gun for? Guess it would give you lower varuable in most cases, helping pick up close targets in the scope.

Depends on the scope really...a cheaper quality scope is gonna need a higher power setting. High quality glass has a better picture than cheap stuff :)

16x would be lots I think! at full power my scope is pretty hard to hold on a gopher sized target!!

I've got a 4.5-14 VX111 LR on mine, but it's a coyote rifle. For a fighting chance on 500 yard gophers you'll want more magnification and turrets, and a quality level beyond your budget wouldn't be out of line. In the price range you mentioned a 8.5-25 x 50 LR VX3 might be worth a look. 500 is a long way to see a gopher, and spot hits.

Thanks guys for your replies back greatly appreciated. Have been looking at some scopes on the exchange forum, but scepticle because i haven't obviously looked through it to notice any differences between models and brands. Should i just go to my local dealer who carrys leupold., and bushnell and buy a scope first hand? Or try and find a used one and upgrade with the money saved buying used and being able to choose more brands also. If anyone else has any other brands, models or comments to help me weed through some of the used scopes would be appreciated.
Thanks everyone.

Thanks everyone.

Absolutely try one out first, and make sure to do it outside. Natural light and indoor light can really fool the eye!
When I faced the decision you are facing now I went to a shop that sold Leupold, Bushnell and Zeiss, they set a table up outside for me, layed a cloth over it and I began to compare.
I loved tham all, but the Leupold had what seemed to me to be a "brownish" tint, it was faint and I would never have noticed if there wasn't other optics right beside it.
The Zeiss that they had held some pretty fat crosshairs, I am sure they make finer ones, but the shop didn't have any on my visit.
I was outfitting a varmint rifle, so I was looking for specific features, it turned out that the 6500 was the only one that had all the features on one scope, side paralax (less hand movement), and an amazing zoom level of 2.5 to 16X, that lets you take the same scope right in to the thick of the bush then step out and zoom right in on a tiny target at 300 yards. That was a huge deciding factor for me.
Light management was a tough thing to do at the time of sale, just no way to compare unless you shop at night. I am estatic with the low light performance though, even when it is too dark to see with the naked eye the scope will provide a great sight picture.
Having the Rain Guard was just a bonus, I love hunting in "less than desirable" weather, that scope just wont fog up!
Even my hardcore Leupold freinds say "Wow", when they look through it in an outdoor enviroment.
It has been on my rifle since the introduction of the 6500 series, smacked around, beat up, frozen, soaked, dropped and tossed in to my truck on almost a daily basis, it holds a true zero and has proven it's self as a rock solid rifle scope.
I think the only mistake Bushnell made on this scope is putting their name on it.:D

I have had a 3200 5-15x50AO Bushnell on my Savage 204 for a year now and its a good scope for the money. Today I ordered a Zeiss conquest 6.5-20x50 RapidZ Varmint for it. I checked them out in store then found the cheapest price online and ordered it there. I have read great reviews on it and I currently own a Zeis 3.5-10x44 scope with the RapidZ 600 reticle and I like it alot

decided that tomorrow morning going to the gunshop with an open mind and try and find myself a scope or atleast see what's out there, so i know what features i want in a scope, and maybe try and get some info out of the them on what they think also. Will see how it goes, and stephen189 you mind saying were you picked up your scope. It will let me know if its in my price range if i'm disappionted in what i see tomorrow might be looking at trying to find some different brands.

I personally like the Zeiss Conquest scopes. But I'd also take a look at the Sightron SIII with the current Leupold and Conquest prices. Many including the Zeiss have varmint reticles. Also you can never go wrong with a fine crosshair.

Here's the Rapid Z varmint reticle.

In another thread I was looking for opinions on the Bushnell 3200 Elite 4x12x40 "600 DOA" reticle, which is similar in principal to the rapid-Z 600 .... I ended up buying one to try out, and while I have not been able to shoot with it yet, it looks good, but the hold over dots might prove to be a little bit large for gophers, and ok for coyotes. I've got it on my CZ 527 .223 to start with, and plan to also try it on the 7mm mag.

The 600 DOA does not match up with any of the factory .204 Ruger loadings, but you could probably find something close to compare it to, and get the reticle to work.

The only other question is if 12x will be enough magnification for you. Otherwise it looks like a pretty nice scope for 400 or so bucks.

I have the Conquest Rapid Z-600, (below) which is similar to the Conquest Varmint reticle:

Compared with the Bushnell DOA 600 reticle:

I always find the Bushnells to be very unforgiving with the eye relief. I'd take a look through a Burris, they have some very nice feature for often less money than the bigger competitors.
