I am having a 338-06 built, it is a rem 700 action with a 22 inch gailard barrel at measures .650 at the muzzle, it will be in a wildcat stock and will have talley rings. So I need somthing that will ballance well on it, I was thinking along the lines of a vx3 2.5x8x38. What do you think?:D

The type of terrain would dictate the type of scope more than the caliber. I use a 2x7 Leupold on my 22/250.

A lower powered variable works well in mixed terrain. 2x7 or 2.5x8 is perfect. I wouldn't go in the woods with a fixed 6.

My VXIII is a 2.5-8x36mm, so if this is the one you mean, buy one, I love it :) Great for upclose and distance, and you can use Xtra low rings.

have you ever looked through a fixed 6x42?
I didn't say it wasn't a nice scope. They most certainly are.

I was trying to relay that a 6 power fixed might be too much in the woods where shots may be close. :)

I dont feel the fixed 6 is a hindrance for close quarters shooting. a 2.5-8 VXIII would be a good choice however, as would a 3-9x40 or 2-7x33 VXII
