Without getting into great detail.........

What makes one brand of scope better than another?

I am not talking Zeiss, Stenier, Leupold, etc. That is a no brainer (they are also terribly $$.

Lets pick apart the under $200 stuff. Tasco, Busnell, Weaver.

If you had $200 for a scope. Which one would you buy?

The best glass for (about) that money is the Bushnell Elite 3200. They're clear, nice adjustments, decent coating, and sturdy enough that you'll feel confident taking them out into the woods. I haven't seen anything at their price range that can compete.

If you can find a good weaver for 200$ I'd go with that. Out of the three they make some pretty good equipment for a reasonable price. I've got one for rimfire .22 and not sure how they'd hold up for bigger cartridges... what are you using it for?
Busnell is decent middle of the road gear. I've got a 4200 and it's held up and reliable on a .308. Reticle's not as fine as I'd like. That said, you won't find a 4200 anywhere near as low as 200$ Not too familiar with bushnells that cheap.
Tasco? Leave the garbage well enough alone. If you're starving and you gotta go hunting this afternoon and this is all that's available behind the counter at the gunstore... become a vegitarian. But seriously... junk. You will not regret spending your hard earned money on a good lifetime scope (something WELL over 200$). You will regret buying junk.
Buy crap, buy twice. And you've still got nothing.

Save your money until you can put 500 into a half decent Leupold. Used ones are fine if they have been taken care of.

Scopes are like most things technical... you get what you pay for.

A friend has the Elite, and I have the Swarovski. Same magnification settings. So we're watching jack rabbits about 300 meters away playing around in a cut hay field, near dusk. He finally can't make them out anymore in the Elite. I am able to keep finding them and hold them in sight for another 20 - 25 minutes.

I've got the Swarovski on my hunting gun, and the Leupold VXIII on my Milcun built precision rifle. Both optics beat anything I ever had before.

Definitely ditto with C_G on the Tasco crap. Anything under two hundred bucks has questionable durability on a larger caliber rifle with exceptions to the rule found just like with anything else.

A burris fullfield II from e-bay for about 200 bucks, including shipping and tax.

I was looking for one, and was never able to find it under $400 US thats with Mildot

as for scopes I'd pick Barska SWAT, but most of them will not hold zero after couple of shots, plus the optics get blurry with variable zoom scopes
