I'm going to build an M40A1 clone, should I buy a 700 VLS and use the barreled action, or should I Buy an SPS and pirate the action, rebarreling with a Gaillard barrel?

If you can afford it, get the Gaillard barrel right away. The vls is probably gonna cost you as much as a sps+teD's barrel, so you would just have to pay for installion.

SPS varmint. If you go with one of Ted's barrels you are going to want to get the action trued up and bolt face and the firing pin and the recoil lug and the trigger done at the same time. This will cost you about $900 plus the sps action and a M40 stock. Buy the sps varmint for $600 and put the M40 on it.

SPS doesn't come in a Varmint barrel. Buy a plain sps and sell the barrel and stock, buy Gaillard's barrel and call Jim Dugan to build it for you. Once the pain of payment is over, you will be way more satisfied with owning the better rifle of the two. Trust me been there done that, once you have seen the other side the grass is definitely greener.

Parker-hale mike, you better look at the remington web sit before you make such bold statements as to say I am wrong. I was not trying to talk him out of getting Ted's barrel put on, just letting him know what he is in for.

6mm shooter, if you are positive Remington makes a SPS Varmint rifle post the link...I was not infering that you are a liar nor that you don't know what you are talking about, all I was pointing out is that Remington doesn't list that particular rifle.

Just go to their site. Click on New products and then on 2007 Spring Products. There is a picture of it right there.

is there a reason why a guy couldn't buy a 700 P, shoot it till it's time to rebarrel and then purchase the clone barrel at that time? That is what I was thinking of doing. No go?

:D

From what I have been told Dustin .. the take off stocks are easily sold for a decent price. I think that is what i am gonna do anyway. I just don't want to spend the money on the barrel right now. Make sure you post pics here when you get yours done! Mine is gonna be awhile yet ... :(

yep, you're looking at close to a thousand bucks once the dust settles for a Gaillard tube blueprinted on your rifle. $750 for sure

buy an SPS and then try to sell the barrel and stock for $75 each.
