Well I find myself with out a 35 caliber rifle in my collection. I'm thinking it's time to get another semi custom built, so what should I get? I've got a spare Remington 700 in 7mm mag to build from, or I could source out another action if I really wanted to, so that's not really a deciding factor for me. I've looked into the 358 STA, and it sure looks like a lot of fun. But others that interst me are the 358 Norma, 35 Whelen, 35 Whelen AI, as well as the .358 Win.

If you were going to do a build for a 358 of some sort what chambering would you choose, and why?

358 Norma would be a good one

STA seems like too much of a good thing :D

blueprinted m700
23" magnum contour barrel (.65" @ muzzle)
nice laminated stock with a good pad
talley lightweight mounts
Leupold VXIII 2.5-8x36mm

I could dig that

X2, always wanted to build a big 35!

There's always the 350 Rem mag too;) I forgot to mention that one. Todd, I know you like shorter barrels, and they do have their place, but myself, if I'm shooting something with a case capacity as the Norma, or larger I'd like to go with a 26 inch, but that's just me:cool: I'm not a mountain, or heavy brush hunter, so a long barrel doesn't handicap me from that stand point.

Out of curriosity why would you choose a 23 inch barrel, instead of 26 inch?

There is another 35 caliber magnum that looks good called the 35 G&H Magnum.

Cases are made by simply necking down 375 Magnum brass to .35 cal with no other changes.

Ackley "claims" over 3000fps with a 88gr load of 4350 and a 250gr bullet. Seems a bit optimistic, velocity wise, but it would be a perfect fit for a magnum 700, and pretty cool to boot! :)

23" would be handier and better for carrying in the bush

if you do none of that, feel free to barrel it at 26" and enjoy the "free" feetpersecond! :D

In a 35 caliber you will not lose very much velocity,I have a 358 norma it started out as a 26" barrel.I had it cut to 22" never even lost 30fps.I can still drive 250's at over 2800.Great moose, bear, bison medicine, more than enough for any game we have in Canada.Start driving 250 grain bullets at 3000 fps and the shooter starts to get beat up to.As you can tell I like the 35,s they all work.

swap the 7 Mag for something with a .473" bolt and build a Whelen....or build a 358 Norma on the 7 Mag action....

Well given that you said a 35.....and assuming you are sticking to that, I'd go for the .358 Norma. Hell of a cartridge.

Dump hthe Remington action or just keep the 7mm. I dislike Remington actions......oh, but I will be in the minority I know.

358 Norma. Power to spare, accuracy, and about as versatile a round as you'll find!

Load it up, 250s @ 2800+

Load it down, 200s @ 2200

Load it in between, 200s, 225s and 250s @ 2500

Load it waaaaaaaaay down, 158 gr pistol bullets @ 1600

Anything from grouse to gizzlies.............. you're set!
