Other than barrel length, what differences are there between these two 1911s? Specifically the Norincos. Any help or direction to answers will be greatly appreciated.

The hammer is different as well. The commander hammers are more rounded, while the government models have the a sharp point to them (aka a spur shape). The reason for this is that these hammers are faster to cycle, and also less prone to catching on clothing when producing the pistol from a concealed carry.

btw there are far more than only 2 variations of the 1911 :D

Great topic, I was just about to ask this question too.
- Are the grips the same for both types of Norinco 1911?
- Can anyone recommend sights for the Norinco 1911.

zzzzzz

Grips are the same, the sights on my new commander are awesome white dots, the new guns are very nice, i had one of the old ones and sold it, Gunnar at armco told me about the new ones and i ordered one, its the best norc yet by far, parts for a commander are normally available where goverment parts are found

Government vs. Commander...

In standard form the 'Government' models are 'full size' sporting 5" factory barrels. The 'Commander' while maintaining the same grip 'height' are shorter in length. Typically, a 'Commander' will have a 4.25" barrel. The slide is therefore proportionately shorter. Both take the same magazines, grips size etc. The 'Government' will typically have the standard long spur hammer with a grip safety with the longer 'tang'. The 'Commander' will have a 'rounded' hammer and a short 'tang' grip safety, if stock.

Commander Model: [note the grip safety here is a 'drop-in' with a longer tang]

If you look at the dust cover in front of the trigger guard, you will see the Gov't is about an eigth of an inch longer then the Commander. Commander is available with an alloy frame, Gov'ts never were (at least not from Colt). Guide rod is shorter on the Commander too I believe, although I've never measure them side by side to be positive. Aside from that and the stuff already mentioned, the rest of the parts can be swapped between them. - dan
