So I just started reloading .45 Auto.
Got my large primers and some new powder. And lots of range brass cleaned and ready to go. Decap and resize the first case only to see that the primer is small!!! There I am trying to stuff a large primer into a piece of Blazer brass with a small primer pocket.

So I sorted the Blazer out and continued on problem free till I came across 1 piece of Federal that was a small primer too, all the other Feds were large, but this one was small...

so lesson learned, check head stamps and primer sizes.
 
Deciding to start making 45ACP with small primers is rediculous IMHO. All is does is necessitate the sorting of 45 brass :mad:

Depends if you reload 9mm and .45 on only one progressive it's nice not to have to change the primer system from large to small.

For me I prefer to prime with hand primers then run the rest of the process on my progressives. I have a large and small hand primer.
 
i switched over years ago b/c small primered brass was cheap and plentiful- it's just a matter of changing your primer feed and MAYBE removing the crimp( hello, federal & winchester) and i use a dedicated press, so it's no big deal- also no big deal if you reload 9- just one less primer size to keep on hand- now my 9&45 autos share the same primers, with the revolvers using the big primers

Small pistol primers in 45acp cases are just like the 10w-30 - 5W-30 nonsense. Manufacturers sometimes seem to think that changes are always for the better. SPPrimers for the 45acp case was and is a bad idea that came to pass. Wished we could have convinced the makers to pass on that bad idea. LPPrimers work just fine. SPP only screw up reloaders.
GM says the oil for my V8 should be 5W-30, but if you look at the owners manual chart for oil selection, it shows the tried and true 10W-30 oil is just as good and in the same temperature range as the 5W stuff. WTF? My engine has never complained to me once about using 10W-30! However, I have purged every freakin one of those SPP 45acp cases from my reloading system.

you think that's bad?- try this one- i've got 2 90 series oldsmobiles, both delta 88s, and both 3.8l engines- they're identical except for 2 years apart, yet the OLDER one takes 5w, and the newer one takes 10w- and those are V-SIXES

I don't believe you.... who would every buy 2 Delta 88s??????? :p

I have a lee turret press so sorting out the brass and changing safety prime ain't too bad. Can't complain when picking up range brass.

one is MINE, one INHERITED, and considering that they're both 20 years old, and STILL GOING, etc
