What to ask for a barrel?

I have a Savage Model 12 LPV .223 with a 1 in 7 twist barrel with 60 rounds through it and was thinking of selling it because I want a 20" barrel with a slower twist instead of a 26" one. What should I ask for this in the EE? As always, thanks in advance.;)

You should ask $20 and I'll take it to save you the trouble of listing it. :D

I know someone was asking $300 (or more) for a similar barrel on the EE at one point in time but when you can buy a match grade barrel for not much more it seems a bit steep for a factory take off. I remember that he bumped his ad quite a few times as well but did not notice if it ever sold.

Most Remington factory take offs run from $50-$200 depending on contour and finish (CM or SS)....I don't think a Savage should/would be worth any more or less than any other factory take off barrel since both can be just as hit or miss with getting a good or bad barrel.

Just my $0.02 anyway.

It's a stainless fluted barrel. This was 20 rounds rapid fire on a windy day with some 52gr bullets I had loaded for another rifle. I'm sure I could have done better if I would have taken my time.

Traditionally, $50 has been a pretty fair price for an unused, or hardly used, factory barrel. Perhaps nowadays you might reasonably get $100, but I would think that that would be it.

you're a joke right? i mean you're joking right:)

for my 12bvss barrel(26" stainless) I got $200 shipped for it.

you have a new barrel that would cost about $250us to replace.. a good match barrel would cost $450 minimum to replace. I say get what you can. there are alot of SMART people who know what the barrel is worth and know how well they shoot and would be happy to give you $200 for it.

Heck a stevens 200 barrel sells for $60+

Was serious, wasn't joking. I knew that I was somewhat out of touch with current prices - guess I'm even more out of touch than I realized...! ;-)

(And I suppose that there's a bit of snobbery and disdain there in my response too, even though I know that some factory barrels actually shoot quite well. Still though, I find it hard to assign too terribly much value to something that *might* work well, or even *probably* will work well, when the lead-pipe-cinch solution is to buy a proper custom match barrel, and *know* it will work exceedingly well).

So KDX, you might want to put more weight on crout's estimate, than mine... ;-)

I bought almost the same rifle barrel. It was the 223 23 inch none fluted. it came off of a LRPV and they are a heavy barrel. It was a 1 in 9 twist and I paid 200.00 from a gun nutter. FYI

Great barrel by the way !!

It's too bad that all the EE ads get deleted or changed to SPF. I was on a another forum when I had a different hobby and all the ads were archived so someone could search out and find what the asking price for certain items was in the past. They left them this way for that very reason.

It would be nice if we did the same here as there is always a "whats this worth" post somewhere on the forums almost daily.

It is not like posts take up a whole lot of server space as it is basically only storing text.

You can ask whatever you want, if someone wants the barrel bad enough, they will pay it. You could always just have the barrel shortened to the length you want. That would be a hundred bucks or less for the cutting and crowning I think.

Scott

Sorry, didn't read the part about the slower twist, guess you can't just cut the barrel.....

I have sold a few for around $150 shipped and even then they were not snapped up that quickly.

I think that at the least when something sells on the Exchange forums the price should have to be left on until the Mods delete it.

A shorter barrel is handy, but the muzzle blast is a problem. Shooting off a bench, one wears muffs. In the field, maybe not. But if off a bench, why not leavit at 26"??

A 1-7 (you sure it is not a 1-9?) will stabalize much longer bullets. If you want accuracy, and especially accuracy at longer ranges when wind is an issue, longer bullets are the way to go. Before changing the barrel, why not load some 55's for the rifle, and some 69s, 75s and 80s.

If your rifle did not test well on the first go with 55s, I doubt twist was really the issue.
