I have a Ruger 77 in 338 win mag that I really don't need, I guess I could sell it but what would you guys build on it if you had the chance, it would be a good candidate for a 416 Taylor or 458 win mag but I already have those 2 covered, these are not full length actions so 2.850" cartridges are out, I wonder if there's a .50 cal that would fit, maybe with a real short barrel.

I just shipped my brand new Model 70 Extreme SS in. 338 out for a rebore. Of course the. 338 is pretty cool already, just not as cool as a .358

Well I considered reboring a model 700 8mm Remington Magnum to. 358 STA, but that cartridge is too powerful for North American game. At least too much recoil for this guy.

How about a 9.3X300 Win Mag, or a 308 Norma, or a 338/375 Ruger...........Or, I had a lot of fun and was very impressed with a 375-350 Rem Mag, 375 C-T...........basically pick anything on a regular belted mag case or one of the Dakota cartridges, or a new 26 Nosler......the sky's the limit basically.......50 cal won't work on a belted mag, case isn't large enough in dia, you have to go to the RUM shortened or the Dakota and it still won't likely work as there still isn't enough case dia to have a shoulder.
You could build a 2.5 - 2.6" belted 475, that's as big as you can go...........

A .50BMG case is longer than your 2.850". What about a .405 Jeffery, since ammo cost don't seem to matter. Case head diameter is 7 thou bigger. Likely won't need any modifying.

I built a 30-338 Win Mag on my Ruger in exactly the same situation. Looked around at all the choices and settled on this. Less recoil and can use all the same brass.

I'm leaning heavily towards the 338-375 Ruger, it's would be the cheapest conversion and there is a small hole in my collection for a .338. Any one know if there's a Smith in Canada that has the reamer?
