What to buy - Kel Tec su-16f or Benelli MR1

Realistic expectations:

Benelli MR1: Gas piston system "Argo", 20" thin Chrome lined barrel.

Pluses for accuracy: Rotating bolt that locks into barrel (like AR). 20" barrel length is decent for factory ammo. Argo system has two pistons that move 1/2". Trigger is said to be ok. Pistol grip which I like.

Minuses: Chrome lined barrel, thin profile, gas system connected to the barrel creates harmonics. Barrel not free floated. Poor ergonomics for optics such as the stock. The firearm is marketed for home defence/ranch work. Not as a target rifle.

Most testing has shown what you would expect accuracy wise from a firearm such as this. Realistic potential? You'd be lucky to get 1 moa. I'm thinking 1 moa max with 1.5 more likely. Which is very good for this type of firearm.

Now let's put this into a comparison:

AR15. LMT MRP. Monlithic platform with 16" CL barrel 1:7 twist. Accuracy potential about 1 moa. Free float Mike rock Chrome lined barrel in a Direct gas impingement system with excellent two stage triggers and ergonomics. You might get sub moa but not much.

Bottom line the barrel. You want an AR to shoot 1/2 MOA? Then you have to go to a match grade barrel.

The ACR for instance is a good comparison. Want the possibility of a few lucky almost 1/2 moa groups? Then you need the SS match barrel. You're not going to get it with the Chrome lined barrels.

I picked up a collapsible stock MR1 at Wholesale Sports in Calgary yesterday for $1729 and I can't wait to try it out at the range tomorrow. I know a lot of people have said it looks 'fugly' but I've loved the look of it since I first laid eyes on it. I guess beauty definitely is in the eyes of the beholder.

I was torn between a Mini-14 and the MR1 but I just had to go with the Italian rifle. I've explained it to my wife that this is my mid-life crisis and the MR1 is my sportscar.

Caramel, merci pour l'information vous avez nous donner sur le MR1. Ca m'aider beaucoup.

Congrats on the rifle. It should definately be minute of coyote accurate. Reliability should be very good since it uses the shotgun gas piston system.

It is your problem sir, my posts are completly reliable you bet... JP.w:h:

I simply refuse to base any purchase on anything you post. Therefore it clearly isn't my problem. My money and shooting time is very safe. Thanks for your concern though. ;)

In a near future i will review both my TRG-22 and probably sell them, so since you will buy nothing on my sole opinion, i will scratch your name from my potential buyer list on the EE, if it is not your problem, could be your lost... JP.;)

I bought ab SU-16 and added all the extra goodies, ar stock, compact forend, red lion precision aluminum trigger etc. It was a waste of time and money. The su-16 is a back pack survival riffle, that's it. I sold it and bought an xcr which is what I should have bought in the first place.

I wouldn't call it a waste of money. Its more of the budget solution being at least $1000 cheaper than an XCR even with all the AR accessories.

Also for those saying the SU isnt accurate, here are some groups from the Kel Tec owners forum. And I wouldn't say that's match grade ammo either :p

If mine would have shot groups like that with factory ammo I would have kept it. Out of the box I feel it's a great survival rifle, compact and light. With tax and shipping it cost me $900. Then I added the kel tec forend and kel tec pistol grip. That cost me an additional $350+. Now I'm at the price of an AR but instead I've got a plastic gun with a light barrel.

No worries. I won't lose any sleep over it.

Besides apparently the MR1 shoots right up there with the TRG-22 anyways. At least that's what I've learned from your posts. Now granted that TRG-22 has been "Caramelized" so it can probably shoot into space. :p
