What to buy?

I am looking at getting a handgun to carry on the trapline. I want something that has enough power to knock a large animal(bear) down quickly.
Any suggestions?
 
Just make sure you file the front site flush with the barrel... that way it won't hurt so much when the bear shoves it up your... well, you know... :p
 
No handgun round will give you a 100% guaranteed one shot stop on anything. However, the .44 mag with the right bullet would likely be your best bet. Ammo is relatively inexpensive and plentiful. The .454 Casull is neither.
Remember that .44 revolvers tend to be big and heavy. So you'll need a good solid belt and holster. And lots of practice. There's no point carrying a handgun you can't shoot well. Especially if you're afraid of Yogi.
 
My concern isn't stopping power, like a charging bear. Its knock down at a distance power I am interested in. Like 75 yd shot at a broadside bear.
So far it looks like 44mag is the answer!

Get a rifle. A lever action .30-30 is light & handy and will work nicely at that distance. You don't require a handgun anymore than anyone else as hunting with a handgun (which you are preposing) is illegal. Your trappers license does not give you the right to hunt with handguns :mad:
 
The answer to your question is a 7.5" Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull.

SRH's come with scope rings so all you have to do is buy a scope and you are good to go...

Wholesale Sports sales them new for about $820.00...

I purchased a Bushnell 2X-6X scope and consistantly hit 3" to 5" groups from a rest @ 100 yards...

If you reload this is a very easy round to load for especially with a SRH but if you don't factory Win 300gr loads will do over 1600fps out of my 7.5" gun.

This is an awesome cartidge and handgun combo that I highly recommend.

I can shoot extremely mild 200gr 600fps 45 Colt loads up to wild 405gr @ 1475fps 454 Casull loads...

In other words this combo can do everything that a 44mag can do and everything it can't...

Then when you want to do some mod's you send it off to Gunnar @ Armco and for about $300.00 you get this back...

.44Mag is great but a .45Colt will do as much with less pressure and a bigger bullet, but you will have to reload. If you're not reloading the .454 Casull is the ticket.

A single action will carry nicely, is reliable but will take practice to shoot & reload quick. Though chances are that if you can't sort it out in 6 rounds you won't have time for a reload.

A double action like CampCooks is a good choice.

A rifle or 12Ga. would afford the ultimate protection but then portability becomes an issue.

Myself I would want something like this in a crossdraw/strongside combo holster, .45Colt of course!

And why would you want to do that? 75 yrds broadside? that is hunting. illegal with a handgun.

With a good rest and 330gr WFNGC's @ 1280fps I can hit a 8"X11" paper @ 100 yards with every shot...

Should be able to stop that bear at 75 yards with that kind of accuracy... ;)
