What to carry for moose!

You don't need a cordless sawzal a good meat saw from Home hardware works just fine but then again it's nice to have
If you plan on hunting out to 500 yards you should be practicing out to 600 or Evan 700 yards and do it of hand And still land a bullet in the Kil zone 100% of the time I can't do that and I grew up hunting in northern BC
I think everybody is just trying to encourage you to avoid those longshots unless you are well-equipped or willing to put in some backbreaking work
 
Add a headlight to your equipment list, along with one spare set of batteries.
I have gutted a moose, while holding a pocket flashlight in my mouth, and I had a sore jaw for about a week. Served me right.

A cell phone, and the number of a local guy with a logging skidder would be about ideal. So much for a perfect world, eh?

I picked up a cheap (like ~$10 or so) two pulley hoist from (probably) Princess Auto. It has crappy 1/4 inch rope on it, but has been a godsend. Use it to turn the moose over , hold the legs apart, hoist a quarter high enough to get a quad under it, pull trees out of the way, and a bunch of other uses.

A friend of mine uses plastic storage bins, leaves the hide and most of the bones where it dropped, if possible. Just gotta remember what you need for evidence of species and ###, and attach the tag to the correct part. If you are legging it, plastic bags and a couple cloth feed bags to allow you to strap the cuts to a pack board or into a pack, would fit in the kit plans pretty well, along with a few light weight cargo tie-down ratchet straps.

The moose I shot was standing beside my car when I shot it. We pulled it out with about 200 feet of rope, and a pick up truck.

If I had to pass on only one piece of advice.... Always look at where the critter is, before you shoot it. Once you have planted it in the middle of a swamp, or at the bottom of a gully or river valley, you are pretty much stuck with dealing with it.

But some of the best hunting stories are about the worst decisions and the fallout of same, eh? :)

bring which gun you are more comfortable with. If you are consistently more accurate with the 30-06 then bring that. The only place that the .300 will shine brighter is at longer range and thats OK too. My buddy and I have dropped a few moose with a .264 Win mag. out to 300 yards. If you are comfortable with recoil then go big.
