I have been mulling over which rifle to get as my first. I have done all sorts of research on each of my choices but would appreciate hearing from those of you with experience with some or all of the following:
Russian SKS
SVT-40
Lee Enfield Jungle Carbine
Ruger Mini-30 (though a bit pricy for my first)

Any thoughts?

Russian SKS was my first. Cheap, easy to maintain, and lots of fun. Just keep 'er good and clean if your firing the cheap corrosive ammo.

$400.00 for the rifle and 1200 rounds. Can't go wrong.

I sold my sks.. Not my cup of tea. I bought a Mosin Nagant instead.

Also, I wouldn't want to run corrosive ammo through a 900 dollar Mini-30. But if you clean really well I guess that is ok.

Get yourself a Russian SKS and you will be very happy. Not the most accurate rifle in the world but they are cheap and easily maintained. If you want to get yourself a slightly more accurate rifle, a lot of .22's shoot respectable groups up to 100 yards.

Whatever you end up with, make sure you maintain it and it will outlast you. Have a fun and safe time!

You know, it's funny, if you'd ask someone this question 25 years ago the only answers would be: get yourself a 30-30 or get yourself a lee enfield.

The SKS has a lot of things going for it. Its the cheapest center fire to shoot. Its durable as heck. People have one shooting competitions with them.

:)

ruger 10/22

i would recommend the ruger 10/22 because it is a easy rifle to get used to and i very versatile and very reliable. it is afordable and many companies make dress up kits for them to make them look like assault rifles.

first gun I bought was my browning bps stalker, after that I wanted a rifle that was fun to shoot and for me I liked the looks and feel of the cz858 more then the sks so spending the extra money to get what you really want is worth it.

Get a couple .22's unless you got tons of money. See what sort of shooting you like then invest in something bigger that fits your style.
