What to do with a Schmidt Rubin 1889 sporter

Donate it to me cause I can reload for it lol. You really just need 7.5x55 with a slightly lesser powder charge. The full length cases chamber fine in mine.

Are you sure it's still chambered for the 7.5x55???

All of the 1889 sporters I've seen had chamber sleeves installed to accommodate 30-30 Winchester

I understood that it was the weak bolt (ie lack of lugs) not the chamber that was the weak point.
The ctg needs to be loaded to reduced pressure but the 7.5x55 case is OK to use and does not need to be shortened.

This is what I've read on line. Not my own experience.

I understood they were converted simply because of access (in N America) to 30 30 ammo and the bolt could handle the pressure of that ctg.

When those sporters first came out around 40 years ago, 7.5x55 was unobtainable. They supposedly aren't safe for the GP11 ammo.

They weren't only sold in North America in the 30-30 chambering.

There are a lot of surplus M1889 rifles out there in original condition and you're right about the case and loading it light.

If his is one of those that was ONLY cut down, then he should just sell it

If it's one of the sporters with a 30-30 chamber insert, lots of 30-30 ammo available and I can tell you from experience, they shoot very well.

Case length for the 7.5x53.5 may or may not need to be trimmed depending on your rifle. The 1889s I have handled seem to accept the full length case just fine, however I know my 1897 KG and my K93 will not accept the round unless they have been trimmed. Still haven't tried my IG 89/96 yet to see where it falls on needing to be trimmed or not.

Interesting that it hasn't been converted to .30-30.

Bit of a hijack here. But are the 96/11's safe with the GP11 stuff? Assuming it is, just want to be sure before i take one home with me.

My 1889 just had the stock sporterized. Still in 7.5mm full length barrel minus the stock contact sleeve.
