I'm going hunting this week for black bear to fill the freezer. If it has a really nice hide I may have a rug made, but if it doesn't (and it's so warm out here this year so I suspect it won't) what else can I do with the hide? It seems a waste to not do anything with it.

I'm in BC.

If it's rubbed I would just toss it. I would just euro the skull if it's a good sized bear. I wouldn't worry about it feeling like a 'waste'. How many deer hides do you keep?

The next bear i shoot I'm going to have the hide tanned hair on, but will trim off the legs and neck first and trim he thin belly section too so that only the best back section will be left. It will cost less than half to tan compared to a whole hide and the center piece will make a nice for a small rug or chair cover.

Tanned hide makes a nice rug. ;) Thinking my next one is going to be a head mount. Had a wolf done that way and like it. Doesn't take much space either.

Grizz

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking a small rug out of the back sounds interesting. Of course I'll only reach a final decision when I see the condition of the hide.

In Alberta it is unlawful to "7. allow the skin of any bear or cougar to be wasted, destroyed, spoiled or abandoned."

right from the hunting regulations book.

why for the most part ive never hunted bear. I process my own meat but can not tan a hide at my house and im not a huge fan of a $500 bill after the kill.

Are you not able to sell a hunted hide in Alberta?

In BC the regulations are different.
