Well to start things off I'm new to shooting, in fact I just fired my first handgun last week but I absolutely love it! :)

Anyway I'm going for non-restricted and restricted courses in September (I found some sort of package for both) and I know what to expect when I go. Even though it is a bit too early to be asking this, what does the process of obtaining ATT involve?

And how long can I expect to wait for my license to arrive in the mail once I complete my firearms courses and tests?

As of now, my first gun is probably going to be a Beretta 92FS, I've heard good things about them :D

Also, I'm new to this site in case you couldn't tell and this is actually my first post (sorry if there's already a thread for this)

I'm right there with you brother. Waiting for my License in the mail. If you are doing your courses at the start of Sept, you shoud have your license in mid Oct. And i've heard the LTATT is an even longer wait.

An ATT will basically be a piece of paper that allows you to take your restricted to and from the range (CFO approved of course). It will tell you which ranges, blacksmiths, etc you can visit with it. A complete waste of money but it is what it is.......

Took 5 days to get mine.

You can expect to wait around 45 days to get your PAL/RPAL, depending on where you live.

Which province do you live in? In BC, you join a club and fill out the ATT form and send it in.

The answer to that question varies from province to province. You'll have to let us know where you live. Some provinces it's a few hours, Some it's a few days and some it's a couple months. Some provinces it depends on if you buy in a store or from a private seller

Getting an ATT can be as easy as calling the CFO and getting it faxed directly to you.
Step 1 have a RPAL
2 go to a store and buy a handgun
3 wait one day
4 call the cfo the next day to complete the transfer with a reference # from the store
5 go to the store & take it home
6 call the CFO and ask for an ATT or LTATT
7 receive it via fax/email

For Alberta atleast.
Can we make a sticky for this?

I live in Toronto, Ontario.

Your boned.

1. Buy gun tell them you will be joining range xyz. Wait for reg and statt to take home (few days I'm told if you buy from a shop)
2. Join range xyz. Spend the next month or so doing their safety courses and supervised shoots ($5-700 for membership and a few hundred for courses)
3. Wait for them to approve your full membership (dunno how long this takes).
4. Once your approved for full membership show them your registration cert for your gun and ask them to apply for your ltatt (first one I'm told is a couple months but gets easier from there)

Take this with a grain of salt because I don't live there and I'm just telling you what I've been hearing on this Site.

New to this forum but i have gone through all of this. Here is my experience.

I live in Ontario as well and when I got my restricted I bought two used handguns from a neighour. After completing the transfer VIA telephone I had to wait about a week before I got a 1 time authorization to transport (ATT) and could go back to his house and pick them up and bring them home (literally 300 yards door to door). Then I went to my local gun club (I was already a memeber) and told them i was a new handgun owner and need to get ATT to our range. I was told i had to take their course (specific to every gun club you are a member of or want to shoot at). After completing the course i had to go to the range with one of our officers and shoot my handguns with them two seperate occasions to prove i knew what i was doing and then I was issued my paperwork. This was a few years ago and i forget the time line of how long this took but as you can assume from all of the necessary running around its not over night.

In Ontario it seems to be an unusually long process especially when your interested in owning/shooting restricted ie handguns like a Beretta 92 FS. I live in Ontario, had my PAL and joined a club to practice with my rifles. I got interested in handguns after hanging around a while. I took my Restricted course and then had to wait for the results to come in, which was around five weeks. I got my application to upgrade from PAL to RPAL had my references sign, got the photo etc and sent it in. It took 63 days for them to process and approve and then another two weeks to mail the card. While I was waiting on this I did my club safety course and supervised shoots, which saved some time. I bought my handgun and it took a couple weeks to come in. Then I had to wait for the transfer, I was lucky it only took two days. I then had to have the club apply for the LATT so I could take it back and forth from the club, it took 4 weeks to come in. All in all almost an 8 month process from start to finish, to upgrade my PAL to an RPAL. That said there are some great tips here on how to speed things up. By the way, the process is totally a pain in the ass, but so worth it in the end!
