I'm looking for a new .22 just for shooting targets. I have a couple in mind and the 10/22 is one of them. I had one before and did nothing to it and it shot pretty steady around 1 1/2"-2" at 50yrds with most ammo. I wasn't overly impressed as I had (and still have) a Marlin Model 60 that shot circles around it with any ammo on anyday. With good ammo my Marlin will shoot 5/8" @ 50yrds without much problem. I want something ALOT more accurate and want to build it over time as project. Can I honestly expect a 10/22 to shoot in the .2" 's and .3" 's or better at 50yrds? If so whats the best way to go about it and in which order should things be done?

Thanks
Tim

Tim,

You won't get .2 - .3" accuracy out of a 10/22 without replaceing every single componant with the highest quality you can buy.

You're looking at $1000-$1500 MINIMUM.

If you want that kind of accuracy for less money, you will be VERY hard pressed to get it out of a 10/22.

It is not unrealistic for a 10/22 to shoot the groups you have mentioned. However, it is going to take time and $$$ to do it. And since you mentioned that over time you would like to make these upgrades, I think the 10/22 is a perfect fit.

The biggest accuracy improvement you can make is getting a new barrel. To shoot the groups mentioned your looking at a high end barrel. Lilja would be the go to for your use.

Next would be to get a KID trigger assembly. Again top of the line, fully adjustable 2 stage trigger. Can be set from 6oz - 2.5LBS

After that, I would look into getting a bolt that has been properly headspaced, radiused..etc. Dirtybore Custom offeres these and in my opinion offers the best customer service of anyone I have ever delt with.

After that, it is going to be the minor things that will aid in accuracy, like a bolt buffer, Edge extractor..etc.

What to honestly expect from a tricked out 10/22.

A lot of fun.. That's why I got mine! Looks cool, people always ask about it, and it's fun! 50yards, consistent groupings about the size of a quarter, good stuff... LOL

If you want accuracy, maybe better get another rifle. Or spend the money to "customize" the Ruger.

They're just plain fun. First thing I did when I got mine was take it to the range, even pure stock, it was fun. Extracting the mag sucked with cold fingers though so I ordered a better mag release. While I was at it, I got a new trigger group to take the pull down to 2 lbs, the bolt release mod so I didn't have to hit that nub to close the action. Also got an the titanium edge extractor and a bolt buffer. Had tons of fun with that for the next few months. Total cost of those mods was about 50-60 US, I think. The KID trigger group is over 200 US and I'm not really convinced it's that much greater than just replacing the trigger group.

For my birthday, I got (myself) a VQ barrel, a nice laminated lefty thumbhole stock and a used 4-12x40 scope. I haven't run it through a gamut of different ammo yet, truth be told I've been having a blast with fun targets and haven't really started measuring groups. About $900 total so far, yikes.

Part of the fun has been taking it apart and figuring out how it works. Next step is going to be free-floating the barrel and bedding the receiver. Just for the fun of it and to learn how to do it.

Here's some people who take 10/22 modding pretty serious: http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=9

10/22 accuracy

A good shooting 10/22 in the .3's can be had, to get in the .2's that is another story. Even the high end bolt .22's cannot consistantly stay in the .2's. A good barrel, such as Green Mountain, can shoot in the .3's quite easily. I have 5 GM barrels that will all shoot in the .3s at 50 yards if I do my part. As far as the trigger goes, the sky is the limit, but I have not spent the $300 US pricetag on mine, look for Skeeter's products on the vendors from Rimfirecentral.com, his are adjustable and very good. If you can do some or most of the work yourself, you can buy unfinished stocks from Boyd's for less than $100 US, do bedding work yourself, and any assembly required. My 10/22's are very accurate, but it does not come without cost and many hours of tinkering. Just my .02.

stocks

funny, i called boyds direct and they didnt want any part of my money to place an order with them, whether it was less than a 100 or a thousand.
i have two 1022's now, one is the tnz line (which is disc), the other is jus being born.
IMO, there are many guns that shoot better out of the box, but few have the options that a 1022 does, and dont we all secretly want a pimped out gold plated 22 with a pink and black stock, nasty big hi power scope, to sit beside your blacked out hunting rig??
i know i do!

My stock doesnt have any pink in it!!!!

Here is the stock I use a lot of the time on my 10/22 for benchrest. I built it myself. It has a flat bottom. I use my other stock for silhouette/offhand shooting. It has color chaning paint (changes with light) :D

Wow! Wild stock CZ. Totally Radical. I am beginning to think I should tart mine up a bit. Have a recent 1022ss and just took the crappy plastic stock off. Found a slightly used stock for $25 on GN in an old ad that was still active. Trigger done and a buffer so we are gettin there. Got a whole bunch of different ammo to shoot and see what she likes. May have a look at the P & D booth at Kamloops show and see if I have to have anything. Hmmmmm...
Still I took 2 grouse heads last fall even though the cheap Bushnell variable wouldnt aim at the same spot in different magnification. Puttin a Weaver K4 on shortly-should fix that. Shoot lots have fun. Yippie Kiyay.
