I have decided a .22 pump gun is in the cards, I was thinking along the lines of an older Winchester or Remington. Can anyone advise me on what to look for or what to avoid? Also any pictures or experiences would be appreciated as always.

Check the barrel as well as the chamber. Pretty easy to get an old pump that has been shot out. I ended up with one a few years back. I have a Winnie mod 1906 pump now with the takedown feature. This one was made in 1937 and shoots like a house on fire. No jams, no ftf nothing. Feels like a bb gun but makes a real good pack gun.

How much money are you thinking of spending? The best ones are Winchester 61 and Browning Trombone. A good 61 will cost you at the very least $600.00.
A browning pump made in Japan is not a trombone as they were made in Belgium and they will range in price from $350.00 to 450.00, unless you are looking a some thing made in Belgium that is mint.
You can find the old Rem model 12 pumps around but most are very old and not well looked after.
I've heard that the new Rossi pump rifles are fairly well made, and might be something to consider. FS

I have a Fabrique Nationale Browning pump that was bought new in 1948. It has likely shot a whole ton of ammo, and it is still one of the most accurate rifles there is. Finish is not what it could be, but inside beat the heart of a military sniper. :)

Make sure it cycles smoothly and accurately (ie doesn't scar the bullet nose). Also check that the screw holding the pump wood on is in good shape (or that there is enough metal to drill it out and re-tap if nec.) I have a Rem. model 12 that is probably 80 years old and still runs like a top as long as I pump with authority. On that model you should probably make sure that the take down screw is good too.
