A friend of mine inherited many firearms from his father last year. He wants to sell me one of his two G17. He will let me choose between the two !

What should I look for to evaluate the guns ?

I think there is a 2nd and a 3th generation, but i haven't seen them yet.

I will have rPAL soon and I'll buy one of those meanwhile Questar gets there P226 Dark Elite.

P.S. I haven't took a Glock apart yet.

Relative round count, sights, any additional features like extended controls, comparative wear and tear, barrel condition.

I mean, normally, these kind of things are non-issues for glocks, but since you get a choice, may as well take the better of the two.

Be sure to field strip both of them and take some close looks. If the decision isn't obvious, than take either one, it won't make a difference.

You should look at the breech face, the part that the primer rests against when the gun is in battery. The more a gun has been fired, the more you will notice the development of a circle around the firing pin hole. If it is hardly noticeable it has not been fired much. If it has a noticeable circle and has some pitting it has been fired lots, like over 50,000 rds.

I would take the gen 3 personally, it's likely to be used less and I like the finger grooves(some don't). Take a look inside and decide for yourself, field stripping a Glock is very, very easy.

If you have the choice between a gen. 2 and a gen. 3 i suggest you take the more recent. It have a rail so you can add some "tacticool" stuffs like light, laser, front grip or bayonet (not sure for the last one;))
