What to put on parts that are under the wood?

I just did a complete tear down on the "new to me" arisaka i got last week and now that its been completely scrubbed down i am wondering what people generally put on the parts of the barrel that will be under the wood... Should i cover it in a light skim of grease? I am asking because oil tends to dry up and i am not one to be taking the wood off my rifle all the time.

I use grease on synthetic stocked rifles and wax on the nicer wood/blues rifles.

I use rug normally used for wiping excess bullet lube off sizers,dies etc.In effect I cover metal with wax/grase mix that never dries,keeps moisture and dust away and keeps bluing really bright.

I highly recommend it.
