i am having a small dilemma / lack of knowledge in my possesion i have 3 candidates for getting a scope mount installed

1. schmidt-rubin 1889 30-30 sporter

2. cooey-carcano 6.5x54 MS sporter

3. ross M10 303 brit sporter

all 3 have cut down barrels and butchered stocks so milsurp wise they are non restorable.

thanks!

Personally I would scope the Ross. To me it is the only one of the three that is a good hunting rifle. The Swiss is well made but ungainly and underpowered. The rechambered Carcano is a fine chambering but hard to feed and probably has those mickey mouse double set triggers that Cooey installed. The 1910 Ross is a VERY strong and well built rifle that has gotten a bad rap since WW1. If the bore is good they are usually very accurate and the straight pull bolt is fast when you become used to it. And as a big game cartridge the .303 British will dump anything in North America. My 2 cents.

i was thinking the ross also since the rear sight is damaged but still functional. Tho the thing kicks like a bloody mule, which sadly causes me to flinch at times, probably no thanks to the short barrel and the overly dried out and falling a recoil pad.

the "mickey mouse" triggers on the carcano i find are great on the bench rest dont know about hunting with it. got a 1.50lb trigger pull on it.

is the 30-30 cartridge not strong enough to drop just about anything thing in North america? minus maybe an oversized moose

Put a new pad on the Ross and wear ear muffs when at the range. Muzzle blast causes recoil to seem heavier than it is. Woods hunting with double sets is not for me, often no time to set the trigger in a hurry and unset the trigger is often in the 8 to 12 lb. range, don't know if yours is. The .30/30 is a fine woods cartridge but if you want to mount a scope I would think you would want to take advantage of a longer range calibre, the .303 has a decided edge in both power and range on the .30/30. However if recoil is a big issue use the 6.5 instead.

Those Schmidt Rubin straight pulls are a hoot, but I wouldn't bother scoping them. Is there any reason why you wouldn't sell and go buy a Savage Axis or whatever? They'd be accurate and easier to scope.
