What to use do de-rust seized up rifle?

Fluid film will disove rust and get in anywhere. But its expensive. Diesel or cooking oil heated up work well also. I collect antique tractors, lots have seized parts, engines etc.
 
If you could find someone with an ultrasonic cleaner it would loosen the stuck parts with no damage. We had a large one at a former workplace and it would quickly remove and loosen just about anything. In the right solution, rust would truly dissolve. Its hard to believe an oil based product could actually "dissolve" rust as iron oxide should be strictly water soluble. All the solutions we used were water based.
 
No it wasn't loaded.It was a Winchester model 70 in 270.No damaged parts ,nothing was replaced although apparently the first shot through it was nerve wracking.I seen the rifle and cold blued it for the guy and although I haven't shot it I was told it was a thumper
 
Soaking rusted parts in vinegar works too. Use white , from the grocery store, it takes a day or two. Completely submerge the parts and it will dissolve the rust.
 
On the light side I often tell my customers to do this when they bring in something that is so rusted up that it’s not worth messing with. Place some very finely powdered aluminum on the rusted areas. Sand the rust and the aluminum together being careful to leave the dust on the gun. Place a small ribbon of magnesium in the dust and put on a welding mask. Light the magnesium and step back. When the fire and brimstone subsides go break your piggy bank and buy a new gun! ;o)
 
Actually, after 24 hours of WD40 and Fluid Film treatment, the action opened and everything works.

I'll clean the bore tomorrow after letting it soak overnight.
 
The best rust remover on the market I've found, is a product called Evapo-Rust. Nothing else is even in the same league. It is specifically made to remove rust and has won a couple of industrial awards for its effectiveness. It's a water based product and all you have to do is soak the rusted metal in it. No scrubbing, scraping or sanding. It will clean the rust off to the molecular level.

I've used a lot of it and it has never failed yet. The toughest test I put it to, was a gun part unearthed by a farmer while cultivating his field. I soaked it in Evapo-Rust and ALL the rust vanished. Mind you there were pits like moon craters left behind!

Best of all, you can keep reusing this stuff. Eventually, it does lose effectiveness though, and then you have to throw it out. But it's enviromentally friendly so you can pour it down the drain (and soak your hands in it with no ill effects...and it's safe to breathe the fumes).

But then there's blueing...
Blueing is rust and it'll strip it all off your gun in less than 30 seconds; beware.

Lee Valley carries it and Canadian Tire does too. When I needed the stuff, I needed a lot and ordered a 5 gallon bucket from the manufacturer in the USA. Google "Evapo-Rust" for more info.

This really is incredible stuff. It and Round-Up are my two farourite chemicals:)

i've been a marine mechanic for 28 years ...dealing with rust and salt and corossion there is a product on the market called triflow...i buy it by the case load for outboards...and it works wonders...and it smells like those old popye candy ciggerettes:D...it's not cheap (about 15.00) a can in calgary...but if it can work and free up salted and corroded bolts etc on a outboard...it will do great on a rifle

I've been reading that engine restorers have used a mixture of mollases and water. Apparently it take some time, but does no damage. Wonder if it would work on gun and artifacts?
