Just bought a new Browning BPS Hunter 12Ga. Very nice shotgun, and I like it a LOT. I brought it home and it was SLATHERED in grease from the factory...

Got all the grease off, and gave it a light wipe down with some Hoppes gun oil. Looks fine for a minute, and then after a while the blueing starts to look like an oil slick.

What is causing this? Its only a shotgun - I know.... But I like to keep my stuff looking as nice as possible.... I know shes gonna get some scratches and dings over the years (character!) but this splotchy looking gun will drive me nuts!

Is there anything else I can use to clean it and/or protect it that wont do this?!?

Any suggestions would be great! (the wife thinks I am obsessed with this thing at the moment... which I'm obviously not... :p )

It could be residual grease still on the metal and then you just put oil on top of it so you get that oil slick look.

Take a clean rag, and wipe off all the grease. Use a little solvent on the rag to help cut the grease. Wipe everything down, and try re-oiling.

Hmmm... I will try that. I wiped the grease off using gun oil, as that is what browning reccomends... Maybe another good cleaning with some #9 would get it all off... Or would there be a better solvent for this purpose?

I dunno what kinda grease Browning uses... but it is some sticky s***.
