What trigger in a hunting rifle

I know most target shooters are using jewell triggers but what is a really good upgrade from a factory trigger for a hunting rifle. Looking for around 2.5-3 lbs pull weight with a clean brake and no creep. So many brands out there.

Timney
Shilen
Jard
other?

The Timney has sure been around a long time. I tend to lean toward a product that has stood the test of time in a competitive field.
 
The stock REM 700 trigger can be polished and adjusted to break extremely clean at just about whatever pull weight you want. I wouldn't go any lighter than 2.5 lbs for a hunting trigger. For your purposes you don't need to spend the bucks for an aftermarket trigger. If you're going to spend the money anyway, might as well buy the best, go for the Jewell with safety.
 
the xmark pro isnt that bad, it can be adjusted just as well as the old 700 triggers. the adjustment screws are just more liberally epoxied in than the old ones. good news is the epoxy stuff they use is very brittle, so if you spend some time with a small, sharp pick-like piece of metal you can chip it all off in 5-10 minutes.

i really like the fact that it is stainless. the old remmy trigger housings were rust magnets.
 
2.5 lbs is too light for any hunting rifle except maybe a varmint rifle. Three to 4 pounds is better for a large game rifle. Far less likelihood of a hard bump setting it off. A gloved finger can set off a 2.5 lb trigger inadvertently.
 
Best factory triggers I have used are Tikka's/Sako's and Kimbers. I have used Timney's and they were good but not better than the ones listed. I have not tried the others.
 
I have a Timminy on a Ruger, it was over polished so that the sear was too rounded off. It just did not feel right. I ended up spending so much time honing it down I might has well just done that to the original.

Never hear of anyone else having a problem with one though.

I like the Timney's. Esp. for the Rugers. My Rem is just a tweaked factory trigger.

I'll be ordering one soon for my latest acquisition, a LH SS M77MII in boring old 30-06.:) Love the gun, but that factory 'trigger' has got to go.
 
I have a leftie stainless Ruger mkII 30-06 and I have had the trigger adjusted down to 3lbs pretty much bang on per digital trigger pull indicator. Barry Jensen at Bits of Pieces and it is pretty crisp.
 
The Ruger warranty guy for Canada lives only 10min. from me, but he wants $125+tx to work on the trigger to get it to 2 3/4 - 3 lbs. I figure thats pretty pricey. What are you guys paying for a trigger job ??

a drop-in timney adjustable trigger is $109 (part 883-600-772 at brownells). not sure if brownells will ship to you (its $109), sometimes the $100 export limit is based on their wholesale and not the retail price.

you could just try ordering a wolff reduced power trigger/sear spring (969-000-138 at brownells). its $3.50, with shipping youll have it for $5 total. worth a shot.
 
I am a very big fan of set triggers. IMO nothing beats a good set trigger for off-hand shots or other field positions. A good quality trigger that breaks at a crisp 3lbs with very little creep is great, but imagine adding the option of a 5 or 6oz break.
KEPPLINGER (Austrian company) makes a set trigger for the Remington 700 w.o the ISS system. That is the trigger I'd go for.
 
The trigger job on my Ruger cost about $60 and is excellent. Barry Jensen at Bits of Pieces. The guy is a real pro and the only smith that has told me that I didnt need to have something done.Imagine that. And he is always busy in an area where there are lots of people that call themselves gunsmiths. Mine is bang on at 3.0lbs.:)
