Just put a Timney in my son's rifle & wondering about the pull. For reference this for a twelve year old, new shooter, .223, going out mainly for target practice & some coyote hunting.

I was thinking 3 or 4 lbs but figured I'd run that up the flagpole here.

3lbs if he's 12 but acts 20, and 7lbs if he's 12 and acts 8.....

3 isn't super touchy, but still needs to be respected.

Oh, and buy the way, lucky kid!!

4 to 4.5 would be a good setting. That is not excessively high, by any means, and he will learn to shoot better with that than he would with a much lighter trigger.

The trigger on my kids Ruger American 223 is set at 2.5lbs. Seems pretty reasonable, and my 13 yr old and my 9 yr old can hit 3" targets with boring regularity at 100+ yards.

If they learn on a good trigger, they'll shoot better. Yanking on a 4 or 6lb trigger won't do them any favors.

This -> "If they learn on a good trigger, they'll shoot better. Yanking on a 4 or 6lb trigger won't do them any favors."

If he is just starting out and it's target shooting I would recommend 2.5 to 3 pounds... let him get used to that weight and he will appreciate it later... he will quickly respect the light touch required...

A 4 lb trigger is the perfect balance for a young fella with gloves in a hunting scenario. if he was exclusive to the range, 3 lbs or lower would be acceptable imo

Don't want to be flamed here, but does your boy have good trigger discipline?.... I watch everything my boys do and one has a bad tendency to get his finger in the guard before go time....

If his discipline is good then 3 pounds is right on in my opinion....

Exactly what I was thinking Bruce. I've always liked a 4-5lb trigger on a hunting rifle that would be used in a cold climate. I would think that if the rifle will be used in warm weather only then 4 would be just about right.

3 pounds seems a little light for someone of your sons age imo. 4-4.5 would be safer yet still very usable.

Someone mentioned 2.5 .... I wouldn't put that on my own field rifle ! Just my opinion.

Light rifles need light triggers to get the most out of them. And I like light rifles.

Curious, does anyone actually wear a glove when shooting at game? I hunt a bit in some cooler temps, and have always had enough time to shake off a mitt. Just curious.

Thanks everybody! Yup, he's new but has pretty good trigger discipline. We played with the pull tonight, gradually moving it up while he was cycling through some snap caps. He felt that a smidge under 4 pounds seemed like the sweet spot and a big improvement over his stock trigger in terms of creep and overall pull. Now to test it at the range this weekend...

I forgot to mention make sure he places the pad on the end of his trigger finger on the trigger, not the crease at the joint of the finger.
