I bought my first ar15 (nea 10.5") and understand it to be 1 in 7 twist, if i read correctly it should work good for heavier bullets. I'm planning on buying a NOE 80gr spire point mold assuming it will stabilize them properly.

Thanks.

Plan on low velocities and lots of leading with the polygonal barrels.

PRVI makes great bullets for 12-15 cents each.

I'll be powder coating them with a gas check so i don't foresee any issues but most of my dealings of cast are pistol bullets. It seems to be working fine over on cast boolits but i will definitely be keeping an eye on the barrel.

Sure? It's just for plinking anyway.

It is all going to depend on the length of the bearing surface of the bullet.
You might get a long, heavy bullet to run in a 9 twist if the bearing surface is short enough. (The 75 gr. Amax is a good example of this).

Just curious, but why would you plink with 80s? Or was it sarcasm that I'm not picking up?

The main reason i wanted 80gr is because it's the only mold NOE offers with a spire point and it should be easier to cast with vs a 55gr mold. I suspect I'll end up with a 55gr or 60gr round nose mold for most of my plinking if the 80gr amax bullets don't work out.

I assume the bullet is not as long as a Sierra 80gr match King? A shorter bullet won't need as much RPM to stabilize, so you might be OK.

I can stabilize a match king in a 1:9 barrel at 2900 fps.

NICE!! My brother and I have been debating about 80 gr bullets stabilizing in my 1 in 9 26" barrel for longer range targets. I'm pleased you were able to stabilize them in yours. My Father-in-Law coincidentally just gave me 20 80 gr MatchbKings to experiment with. Now I just need to ensure my recipe will have a minimum velocity of 2900 odd fps.

It's great what you can pick up cruising through this web-site.

Assuming you can load them short enough to fit the magazine you are going to have issues with leading of the feed ramps, bullet tip deformation and you may have issues with them jamming as they go up the feed ramps. The powder coating may help but it's definitely not an ideal bullet choice for a mag fed semi auto and that's an awful lot of labor to make a plinking round. If I was you I'd just buy 55gr bulk FMJ in the 1000+ round quantities to save some cash.

I don't think they will unless I seat the bullet really deep. I'm going to try some jacketed 80gr bullets before buying the mold.

That may not tell you anything since the bullet shape will be different. I'm pretty sure it was 80gr A-max that I tried a couple years ago, couldn't load them short enough to fit the mag.

I think everything your looking for can be found on the Berger Bullet web site. I loaded up and shot a box of their 80gr VLD and shot them in a Colt Hbar 1:7 Without any issues. This was about 15 plus years ago and without searching I cannot find my load info or targets shot. Look them up and hope this helps.---- Dieseldog!

So i bought a box of Hornady 80gr Amax bullets and loaded up 10 with 23.8gr of H414 to try them out. I don't remember the OAL but they had to be hand loaded so i wont be getting that 80gr mold after all. They accuracy was decent enough but i need more trigger time with the ar to get my accuracy improved. I did seat one of them deep enough to fit into the action but i used trailboss for the powder so it wouldn't cycle the action.

I'll try loading some more with less powder and deep enough to fit into the mag and see how they do and get some target pictures. But even then i only have access to a 25 meter range so it's all a moot point.
