what type of bullets do you use

I'm getting some reloding equipment soon and I will most likely only be shooting out to 300 yards in the near future and was wondering what type of bullet you would recomend for this range, .223 the barrel is 26" with a 1-9 twist. and just for curiosity what type of bullet do you use for the longer range stuff 600-800+ yards.

Basically for 300 yards any match bullet should work fine for target shooting. You'll probably want to try a couple to see what your gun likes the best.

Once you get into the longer range shooting you'll need to select something a littler longer/heavier with a high ballistic coeficient to ensure the bullet stays supersonic and stable at extended ranges. I think there are a few people on the boards who have had some success with the 75 grain hornady a-max.

what type of sierra bullet is used in the federal gold medal match. I know on the box it says sierra 69g BTHP but is there a name for these bullets or did I just answer my own question? each type of bullet seems to have there own fancy name. I have had good results from this ammo at a 100y
 
The 69 Sierra match is very good to 300 if it is not too windy. The Hornady 68 bullet is about the same, but has a heavier jacket. better in rough barrels.

For 300 to 800, or any distance if it is windy, you want a 75-77 gr hollow point match in a red or green box.

For these bullets Varget, RL15, 4895, Win 748 is a good choice. About 25 g with the 69 and about 23 with the 75.
 
Get some of each and see what your barrel likes. Another issue that affects accuracy greatly is seating depth in relation to where the lands and the bullet ogive like to be
 
I run 77gr smk w/Varget in my Savage 12 FV 1-9" but not all 1-9" twist barrels can handle the heavier weight bullets .For 300m try the 68-69 gr bullets they are a very good performer
 
Sorry, Yes it's a bolt action Savage 12FVSS .223 1-9 twist. It's seems to like the 69g in a factory load so that might be a starting point for me. and I believe the local shop here had the A max in stock so I'll try them and the sierra match king. Now for the bullet wait, 75-77g might be the max for wieght?

I do believe that the 77gr is max weight for this twist
 
In my .223 Rem700P 1:9 twist rifle the longest bullet I have success with is the SMK 77gn, Lapua case, CCI BR primers, Varget. These shoot very well out to 800 yards.

This may seem to be a dumb question but how do you tell if bullet is seated just off the lands? I know if the bullet is touching them it can create excess pressure. do you just slide a round in and feel if there is any resistace?

I use the Stoney Point Over All Gauge with the modified cartridge to take measurements. There may be other ways but this system works for me...
