So wondering what type of shotguns people here use, I noticed a lot of peopel shoot over and under. is thatthe best coice?

I never tried it:redface:, but watched others shoot it and it seems fun... There’s a single shot 20ga I like and was thinking of buying and using it for skeet/trap, but I know there’s one event where you have to shoot 2 clays at the same time…

Over/unders are the most popular with semi-autos in second place and increasing in popularity.

A single-shot will work fine for singles trap but not for skeet or any other game where there are doubles.

A single shot 20 for clays is a big, big mistake. It is so light that one or two boxes of shells is all you'll want to fire, never mind it's other inadequacies.

I use an O/U, S/S, semi and a pump at different times. It depends on how I'm feeling that day. I was using an O/U for a long time when I shot a round with a pump action that I was going to use cowboy action shooting. I brought it out to the trap range to put some rounds through it, and I shot 4 birds better than my average. I stuck with that gun for a couple of months and shot my first 25.

Most people I see though use an O/U.

I've shot skeet and trap with a pump but currently use an O/U or semi depending on my mood. I chose semi if your just getting into the game simply because of economics. For the price of an entry level O/U you can by a near top of the line semi. For 700 bucks you'd be right in the game with a good gun.

If price is no object or you already have one I'd go with the O/U. They are more reliable and for me I like the way my O/U swings compared to my semi.

For singles I use a M12 or one of my O/u's.
I have been know to bring out my father's handicap gunevery now and then, but don't shoot it much.
For handicap shooting I use the M12 also.
Doubles are shot with the FN Browning superposed.

If price were no object, I would choose two different guns for trap and another gun and a set for skeet. I would also want a dedicated gun for each of the international versions and at least one for sporting clays. Pick one? I presently use an o/u but am leaning towards a semi for recoil reasons.
PS waiting for win/64 to call me a whimp or tell me I don't know much about gun fit.:p

What was you father's handciap gun?

You wouldn't get the barrel broke open - let alone reloaded - and the second target would be lost. Foolish thought for competition but go ahead and try .

Not for competition, for fun ;)

I don't think it would be easy not I doubt it's impossible...

For Fun?;) Why not? Drop in to your local trap club. Get permission from person in charge. As long as you are by yourself and gun is pointed in right direction? Give it a try! Knock yourself out:D

Be sure to report back to this thread on how you did! A video would be nice:p

I've tried that speed reload in Sporting Clays where the station was a report pair with a third target thrown on report of second shot. You then had to reload and shoot the third crossing target - Very few people got that third target.

Throw in a 16 yard disadvantage to start and 30 - 35 yards to break that first target and I agree with Covey Ridge - knock yourself out. Second target is going to be on the ground or awfull close by the time you get the gun reloaded.

Since just for fun the only rules are safety rules. Give yourself a chance anyway and use a Sporting Clays thrower from somewhere beside you to throw doubles.

If a new shooter comes out to our club with a single-shot and wants to try skeet the squad will usually just throw singles for him instead of the doubles.

But for someone who has never shot clays before to attempt to shoot doubles with a single shot sounds like a quick way to make himself unwelcome. It's stunt shooting and from a first timer or new shooter I don't think it would be appreciated at most clubs.

I would definietly look around on the board here for a used auto rather than that 20 gauge single. I don't know if you would enjoy the recoil and then you lose the option to try trap doubles or sporting clays 5 stand.
I have seen used Ithaca autos on here for $250-$350 range that would make an excellent entry level gun. They work well and I have had very good luck with them. Although through the years I have moved to Beretta and Benelli auto's for sporting clays and trap shooting.
