What types of targets are you using at the Vic. Fish and Game?

From what I read you need to bring your own target stand to the range. Can that stand support metal gongs or do they only allow paper?
Any photos of your stands are appreciated.

I shoot both, 9mm and .45

(couldn't decide which one is better so I got both)

Rule # 7 - ONLY paper targets or approved steel gongs may be used on the ranges.

Taken from the Victoria Fish and Game website. I'll link the range rules at the end. If you've never been make sure you read, memorize and follow them.

There are sections of wooden fencing on the range you can staple targets to. I would recommend bringing a piece of cardboard the same size as your targets to use as backing. You also need to bring your own stapler, but most members will lend you theirs if you've forgotten your own, and ask reeeeeeaaaaal nice:D.

Don't forget to have fun! Everyone out there is super friendly, one of my favorite places to shoot.

Keep in mind that the fencing (25 yards, 50 yards, 100 yards, 200 yards) is really hit-and-miss. I have been there when they have all been there, ready to use. I have also been there, more often than not, when the fencing is so shot to sh_t that perhaps there is a single fence at 100 yards. Be prepared to improvise when it comes to attaching your targets.

If you look around the fireing line, you will likely spot portable target stands, old car wheels with a post and frame welded on. At least these you can drop anywhere on the range that suits your shooting. But again, they have been abused so you might want to bring big cardboard, duct tape, etc, to jury-rig your target.

Check out the 2x4 stands the IPSC guys use. I don't have a picture to post, but they are easy to make out of 4 pieces of 2x4 18" long, a few wood screws and a 4 1/2" bolt and a nut.
Two pieces of 4' lathe are the uprights that hold the targets.
Take a run out to the multi purpose range when they are practicing and you'll see how easy they are to make and use. Cheap too!

You could go to the Sheet Metal Supermarket on Keating, and get them to cut you up some steel, to your specs...

I found some nice square pieces of thick steel at the dump the other week; looking forward to shooting at those... but I'll have to make sure they're angled properly, so as not to send ricochets flying.

Tagged for interest... I do confess, I bring jugs to fill with water to shoot at, and I do also confess I clean up after myself, so that there is actually 'NO PROBLEM', capiche? all you VFGPA range-nazis?

...and apparently they'd prefer one doesn't shoot clays as targets on the range. They leave a mess.... ....WTF...

...no ill blood intended, but I do believe that as long as I'm tidying up after myself, there is 'NO PROBLEM'. Regards the 'mess' the clays leave... I'm not even going to start.

As much as I'd like to...

They really seem to be on this "leaves a mess" kick lately.

Shooting clays leave a mess? Very odd. Better shut down the shotgun range.

I was out there not long ago, and beside me a fellow was teaching his young (10?) son how to shoot with a 22. Dad put some balloons as targets at 25 yards. I can see why Dad would use balloons, since they go pop, and give immediate visual feeback to the kid as to if a hit was made. It makes shooting fun. A local fudd walked up and started preaching how their target, balloons, was unapproved, and made a mess, and had to be taken down immediately. The kid didn't seem half as interested in shooting after just being given #### by old grandpa. Way to encourage new shooters.

I have had several different non paper targets "approved" simply by asking Robi,at sign in,if they were ok.
Last time was about 6 months ago.

That's fair. I just heard that they are pretty strict in terms of what you can shoot. I'm not the kinda guy who brings over a 60" tv or a 50gal Aquarium but I do like exploding pop bottles and such. hehe.

I'll give him a call and take it from there.

Cheers!

Man that stuff pisses me off. There are WAY too many of these range nazi types there for my liking. As long as a fellow is safe and knows the rules and plans to clean up after leave him and his son the Phuck alone!!!
