What was your smallest game with a big gun

A couple of years ago on a Moose trip in 5-15, I tried to clip the head off of a Ruff Grouse @ about 45-50yds. with a 338wm Sako carbine & 250gr Federal Premium ammo. After the puff of feathers I put the rifle back in the truck and while it was doing the 'chicken' in the middle of the road, I headed down to retrieve it. Just as I got to it, it righted itself and flew off down the valley. My partner added insult to injury and came out with advice to "get a bigger gun". I no longer have the 338.

Gophers with a 375H&H. 300gr Hornady roundnose, full power hunting loads, naturally, after all it is hunting! LOL

40 -60 yard shots, it is a real crowd pleaser and also airiates the pasture for better grass growth.

Groundhog, .458 Win Mag, 500gr Softpoint - one very dead hog, big whacking crater behind said hog.
The most spectacular had to be, again, a groundhog shot, 100 yards with a .300 Win Mag, 168gr BTHP @3200fps - total vapourization except for two hind legs.

after the first grouse I shot with the 308..... I let many more pass without harm. I found out that I get angry if I miss the head, and aim for something bigger

I have a 410 and some 22s that I carry for grouse only from there on
150gr @3000 fps is not a good recipe for bbq.

I've head shot grouse wiht 270, 7Rm, 303, 30-06, 300WM 300WSM, 338WM...and possibly others.

A fw years ago some of you recall I had to defend myself from a multiple grouse charge using the 300WSM and 180gr Partitions... I had to shoot quickly and accurately, since it was such a dire situation, only CNS shots woudl break the charge.

:p

I tried for a grouse with my 45-70 once. He was about 20 ft away and just standing there. I had to load the rifle and aim. by the time I was ready to shoot and pulled the trigger it decided it had all it could take and started to fly. Well not much left to the bird but a cloud of feathers and guts after the 300 grain bullet hit it.

Another time I was hunting chucker on Griffith Island with a friend who had invited me. The birds were holding really tight and sometimes were not flushing until you almost stepped on them. One flushed at my feet and went straight up as I swung to shoot him the barrel of my 12 gauge was about a foot from it as I pulled the trigger. The head and partial breast went to the left and the legs went to the right. Not enough gun but too damn close.

grouse with a 7mm RM :)

and a peskey squrriel at the cabin (in the cabin), little bugger was really pissing me off. thoughthe could hide behind a 3" aspen :) 30-30 penetrated the aspen and all the wood shards cut the little bugger in half.
