I have 2 sets of Rem 700 bottom metal that wont latch shut when held into stock inlet.. A new set I have does so its not the stock.... It locks up fine when on its own. Is it usually the floor plate that wears as its softer metal than the release? Seems like plate hits stock before it can latch.

Some inletting is too deep and the bottom metal may require a washer to hold it a bit higher so the floor plate can close...

that is odd, mine was hard to latch as well & I never use it, I had to try a few times to slam it shut. I have since switched to a boxed magazine kit but kept the floor plate anyways incase I decide down the road or in the future I want to part with the rifle.

I'm not overly pleased with Remington's finish on there firearms or bottom metal. they tend to be down half @ssed / cheap. older pre 700 SPS & 870 Remington's were done better then the cheap sh!t they use now.

Dennis, I tried my new set of bottom metal in 4 different stocks tonight and it works fine, the other 2 sets dont work in any of the stocks. Something must be worn??

Well there are two things that can wear... the latch itself or the little tab on the floor plate... that's something you will have to visually figure out.

Apparently they latch and release correctly out of the stock? I read that in your original post... if they latch and release correctly out of the stock then they probably require a washer to hold them slightly higher out of the stock so the floor plate does not engage the stock before the latch engages.

Remington has probably made 8 million of these castings and every assembly is not identical.
