Since I am considering the Savage 12FV in .223, I want to get an idea of what I am jumping into acessory wise.

I am not rich, so I can't go for on of the expensive scopes, but what would you all recommend for a scope under say $250ish?

Would a Bushnell Banner be a good choice? I have one on my CZ American and I really like it.

Thanks

My son has a 3200 Bushnell 10X on his .223 and really likes it, so do I in fact!
Cheap from Higginson Powders, $240, with target turrets and mildot reticle...

That's the only scope in that price range I'd touch. "You get what you pay for" is a rule when it comes to buying glass.
The guys at bushnell really gave shooter's a break on this scope though. It is well worth the money :)

Yeah, that's about what I figured when we shot it.

I had heard so much about it here thhaat I figured for the price I might as well chheck it out myslef!

Everyone's first had experiences with positive results make decisions like this so much easier.... this scope has gotten good reviews a bunch of other places on the internet as well.

Higginson's is a great place too, that's where I got my last Bushnell.

Thanks again guys! Keep them coming if there are anymore opinions/advice.

I see you guys are recommending a 10-40, not a variable power, and what about an adjustable objective? I thought those thigns were vital in a scope?

Vital is only what you require to achieve your goal. The Bushnell is very good for the money. I have the Bushnell legend 5.5-15 mil-dot on my wifes savage and she loves it. It is a variable if that is what you want ,and I believe they are around $230 at P&D in Edmonton.

The 10X40 has parallax set for longish ranges. You can play with the eye focus but this is not a short range scope. The Legend is a very nice product with turrents and mil dot reticle.

For more utility and short range use, I would go with the Legend. The new Elite 3200 5X15 might also fit the bill. A bit more money but possibly more scope.

Don't be afraid to look at quality used either. I have played with some wonderful dirt cheap used scopes. OLD, made in Japan, Bushnell banners are usually $150 at gunshows. Great scope. Balvar, and Scopechiefs (made in Japan) are all great. So is the World Class Tasco target scopes. The key is to make sure these older products are made in Japan. The new stuff from China really sucks at this price point.

I think the Legend fits what i am looking for. Like I said, I have a Banner 6-24x40 which is decent, and I use it on my CZ American.

Just out of curiousity, how would one of these (Banners) fair on a .223? Incase I have limited funds and can't go for the Legend.

Will the optics on the Legend be any better than the Banners? I am guessing so as there is an $80 price difference.

The optics on the legend are crystal clear for the price, not leupold or IOR quality but clear enough to read a Postage stamp size poker card at 100yrds clearly, it has paralex adjustment. Pay the $80 to go with any less of a scope will probably cost you more money down the road. Just an opinion. If you can save a few extra dollars hold out a while and buy one of Ricks Optisan scopes at Alberta tactical. Otherwise go with the bushnell 3200 10X or the legend.

Sounds good, if I am going to spend the money on the 12FV (ok maybe it's peanuts to most on here, but it's a lot for me) then I might as well go with good glass. Most likely the Legend.

Thanks a lot guys!!!

If I were getting this to hunt with often enough, I would get a 3200 in 50mm and have it forever. If it were for the range, I would get something with AO, minimum a 3200 series. I know its another $100 but you won't be sorry later.

Yeah, it is going to be just a range gun as far as I know...

But jeez.... $240CDN before taxes @ WSS for the Legend is already stretching it as it is.... I am already going to have to borrow my CZ's scope until my birthday in Feb when I can actually get the right scope for the 12FV...lol

What can happen to the finish on the 10FP's.... can it chip or anything? Any downsides or upsides to the matte powder type finish?

Mueller has a good rep on the Savage board and others down south. They have only recently become available up here. They have a new model out that they are offering very cheap to get people talking about it. Phil at White Falls hunting Supplies is the Canadian dealer. He has a post in the Dealers exchange forum here.

The new model is 8.5-25X40 with mildot reticle for about $200 Canadian on the introductory deal:
