By "SKS" I mean dirt cheap to buy and feed, commonly available, doesn't "look" particularly good yet is superbly reliable, built like a Russian tank so it can go thru extensive use/abuse/neglect and without <any> maintenance for extended periods yet remain just as reliable as if it was cleaned/oiled/pampered every day, twice a day. Reasonably accurate, can be broken down and properly cleaned/oiled/maintained by an untrained, blind monkey (and not a very bright one either) etc... You get the idea. So what IS the "SKS" of handguns ?

The good doctor at Lever Arms in Vancouver suggests the Norinco Tokarev...simple as hell, eats surplus 7.62, cheap to buy...accuracy? Well...

Pretty much any Russian gun wins for reliability and ruggedness... Tokarevs, Makarovs or Nagant revolvers.

I'd say for price, price of ammo, availability (You'd have to buy an extended barrel for the Mak) the Tokarev wins though.

No way man. the 1911. John M Browning's masterpiece. More clones of it than any other handgun. Sure, some of the newer clones can be finicky, but the original design & specs are of the most reliable out there. It's solid too. Had it not been for these clones (Kimber, Wilson, et al) the price wouldn't be anywhere as steep as it is today.

I have to disagree. I dont think the 1911 would be at the top of the reliability list. The SKS/AK has a well earned reputation all over the world.

1911... reliable?

Maybe NOW, with some of the modern tweaks.

Originally... Well, it was a step forward a hundred years ago.

But, we are all entitled to our opinions!

the tok, but in 9mm- 7.62 may be cheap ,but it's almost impossible to find components in my neck of the woods- same with loaded ammo- everybody's got 9- and it's only reloads that give problems in my experience- the factory whites work just fine

price wise ruger 9mm
or smith and wesson sigma both dirt cheap
although for the same money u can get a grandpower from marstar which is a far better gun in my opinion

Well I don't know what's the SKS of pistols but I sure know what's the AK of pistols. It's my MP-446 Viking. I never ever had a jam or a misfire in 1000rds.
I fired everything from cheap reloads that you even see the round flying to factory loads and super hot load. One word .F-L-A-W-L-E-S-S.

Built like a tank and super accurate. Here is some comparisons with the Glock.
These pics are from Armeafeu.org. Coutesy of Sillymike.

That MP-446 Viking is interesting. Where did you find it and how much? Also are parts and mags readily available? I have a special place in my heart for Russian stuff...

Alas the dealer that was selling them, Armrus, in Montreal closed shop. They were going as low as $600 brand new. I got mine before they were sold out. The problem is mags. It came with 2 and I'm searching for more. I contacted Baikal Canada to see if they were getting some and I was told yes. I'll have to recontact them. The mags are awsome. You load them like you load a rifle mag and not like a pistol, directly from the top. As far as parts? This baby seems indistructible. I dont think you'll need any ;)
