What would it take to get a vz 58 to accept .308win?

Practical question. How much work would it be? I'm inagining a new reciever, bbl and bolt carrier... anything else?

When I looked at it this is what I came up with: recoil spring, gas piston, magazine, receiver, bolt, barrel, firing pin, extractor. Would not be much work if you has access to a full blown machine shop and were an experianced machinist. To get a machinist to do it for you would cost around 80 hours of labour and a shop charges around a lot an hour. Not worth it at all.

Isn't there a new company building gun parts in Canada. I'd bet people would pay the value of a 58 on top of the rifle for it to be .308. Heck I'd pay $1200 for one, if only due to the fact that there are so few options in .308.

I know the Czechs made one maybe someone should contact them and get them to make it.

Its probably a pipe dream but I think the market for it would be close to the size of the regular 58 market just because of the caliber and hunting possibilities. Perfect timing for the market too as norc m14s are drying up.

kick might be a pain though. Muzzle brake would be a must.

Simple: stronger, thicker receiver walls and a few changes in dimensions.
One pound and a half more weight would be well advised, too.
Beefing up the lockup system would be easy to do. Maybe adding a tunable gas regulator would help, too.
PP.

I would imagine a smaller hole in the bbl at the gas block would probably be enough. I still think a brake would make up for the lightness in weight. I would imagine the new receiver wouldn't have the scallops in the sides making it a little stronger, bit heavier and easier to mount a scope on. Man I wanna see this happen now. Someone please take my money, lol.

IDK about the 5.56 but the original 7.62 nato was only a prototype.

I'm sure the 5.56 would be about as easy as a new bbl and some gas tuning. Actually that could be interesting as an aftermarket kit.

Dave when was the last time you saw 5.45 for sale anywhere in Canada in any quantity? Any oddball caliber would defeat the purpose unless all you wanted was bragging rights. I mentioned .308win cause its a well accepted, well liked and very available cartridge. More to make the 858 a really useful hunting rifle.

I'm sure the reason there is no 5.45 in country is because there are no guns that fire it in country. As soon as you introduce a gun that eats 5.45 I'm sure someone like CanAm or Marstar would step up to the plate.

From what I understand we are getting OLD surplussed 7.62x39 that is being cycled out of war storage and likely being replaced by newer non corrosive ammo by the Czechs and Hungarians making it perfect for markets like us and the US. AFAIK 5.45x39 is primarily made by Russia who will not sell it to us. Either way it would never be as cheep as the stuff we are getting now and we are talking about firing it in a weapon that doesn't exist so although I like the idea the 5.56 would probably be a much better option.

Johnone we need the 5.56 version as well, lol.

Yea that is in another country and Russian made ammo. I'm talking about ammo you can buy here.

I'll be completely honest that I'm not sure about the Russian thing but I seem to remember reading somewhere that Russia will not sell it to us for civillian use.

The 7.62 mm NATO CZ 858 would make a good base for a dragonov clone, and an "SKS 74" (an SKS in either 5.56 or 5.45) would be interesting. Kind of like the Ruger mini 14.
