What would you choose for IPSC?

Hi!
Taking Black Badge formation this spring. Only pistol I have that fit requirements is my Beretta 92FS.

I would like to get something else, still in 9mm. Between a Glock 17 or 19 and a CZ SP-01 shadow, which one would you choose?

Since I tried Gen 4 Glock, well I don't "hate" them as much as before;) Still find it not that good looking, but maybe you get to love it when you have it? has a great reputation.

Always loved the SP-01.

Is one better than the other for IPSC?

Any other suggestion that would be better in the same price range and less? Other than the M&P.

Thanks!

I'm not a fan of ipsc, but I'm gonna bet a pay check says a good portion of folks will be saying the CZ. Seems to be common knowledge that ipsc guns around here is CZ shadows. A gun I'm also not a fan of.
Funny how that works :D

If your Beretta fits your hands well and you shoot it decently then go with it. Perhaps get a Wolff spring kit to fine tune the trigger pull and blaze away.

This assumes that you can find a decent enough holster for it. Mag pouches are not an issue. The mags for the Beretta are a skinch thicker than the CZ mags so any mag pouch which works for the CZ mags will work for the Beretta mags with a slight adjustment of the tension screw.

I know this to be true as I've got both CZ's and a Beretta 92fs. I simply haven't tuned the Beretta trigger yet. Which, come to think of it, is really silly since I've got the spring kit which came in sometime last summer. DARN THAT PROJECT LIST! ! ! ! :D

Really, there is no reason at all why you can't use the Beretta just fine. Other than the slightly fatter grip area which doesn't fit me quite as well as the CZ's the guns are nearly the same to actually shoot. And the Beretta has that nice decocker.

Oh..... having used my Beretta a few times for IDPA practice be sure you either learn to rack the slide without switching the decocker down to the "SAFE" position or get into the habit of loading a new mag and dropping the slide with the release. I found during my practice sessions that if I was not attentive to how I racked the slide back from a slide lock reload that I could switch the decocker down to the safe position. And when that occured I was treated to The Sounds Of Silence and immediately figured that I'd broken the gun.... :D

I would choose the one that fits my hand the best. In my case, it's not the Glocks ;). Don't hate 'em, they just don't fit my hands very well.

I've seen a myriad of pistols in IPSC. Whatever suits the shooter best is the one to go for. You don't get alpha's for having a good looking gun.

(E)

If you want the best results, go with the Shadow because it's the easiest to shoot so you will shoot best with it. Despite this, I will never own a Shadow, I'd rather lose shooting my M&P lol.

A Glock 19 will be at a disadvantage because unless you have a factory Glock barrel, you won't be able to shoot it in Production so you'll be up against more "race" type guns.

I was in the same boat as you a couple of years ago with trying to pick one and in the end I ended up going with the SP-01 Shadow and never looked back, I still have the Glock, but keep it as backup. For some reason I kept putting it off but in the end I realized the the pistol will out shoot me any day the way it comes out of the box. Heck, I was so impressed with the Shadow that I went out and got myself a CZ Tac Sport and it also did not let me down, this thing is a frickin lazer. in the end nobody can decide but you, go with what feels best in your hand and put some miles on it, nothin beats trigger time. Good luck.
Regards.

Thanks guys :) I will have to talk with the IPSC guys at my club to know toward what division I want to go before deciding what to get.

rifleman338, Tactical sport is my dream pistol, tried it several times :D

Have a nice day!

I used My CZ SP-01 for 4-5 matches, then switched to HK P30L LEM, very happy with it.. Also thinking to give a Walter PPQ a try..

All the guns mentioned fit in Production Division but that division is sooooooooooo last decade! Get an STI Spartan in 9mm and compete in Classic Division. It's the division where all the cool kids are gravitating to!

I used a Sig P226 for my BB course and one of the other guys in my course was using a CZ Shadow. I asked if I could hold it and I instantly fell in love. After some months and IPSC matches with my Sig I bought a CZ Shadow and started shooting with it. It is a great gun but it doesn't shoot any better than my P226 or Beretta 92A1. The CZ does get a lot of hype in IPSC because Adam Tyc won with it for how many years, it is promoted like no other in production class, it comes out of the box with many upgrades other production guns do not have giving you an obvious advantage which is why most people like it(noob gun friendly). I also have a 85 Combat which I just got last summer and actually like it better than the Shadow because it is more balanced due to it not having all that weight in the front. Just use the gun that feels best to you. It all comes down to the shooter anyways, not the gun.

Talked with some peoples last night, think I'm heading toward Production Division.

So I have 3 more questions:

1. Between SP-01 Shadow and 85 Combat, which one has the lightest trigger pull?

2. Glock 17 with factory barrel, is it that bad? Or hard to find?

3. Ever compared these triggers with the Beretta 92FS?

Thanks again guys :)

Have a look at and preferably shoot the Ruger SR9 before making up your mind. The more I handle my wife's SR9, the more I'm impressed with it. That's as close as I can get to it, as she won't let me shoot it!

The type is also available as the SR40 and the SR45 is now out in the US. Lever Arms will have them in stock by spring, or so they say.

The SR45 is definitely a gun I could appreciate, something I never thought I'd say about a "Tupperware" gun.

Trigger pull shouldn't be a factor in choosing a pistol in my opinion. Any pistol can have the trigger improved simply by replacing the mainspring, shooting and dry firing the pistol or getting a trigger job. The 85 Combat will be the same after putting in a competition hammer and doing any of the steps mentioned. Put a D spring in your 92FS and it will not be that far off from a CZ Shadow with a 13lb mainspring IMO. I have the Shadow and a 92A1 with a D spring and Elite hammer. Also, there is nothing wrong with the barrel in the Glock.

The SP-01 and CZ85Combat both use the same action and both lack the firing pin block. So the triggers will be VERY comparable. Differences would be more due to tolerance stacking on each gun. In other words equal by any practical comparison.

Owning both CZ's and a 92fs I'd say that the trigger pull can be made to be comparable to the SP-01 with a little effort. Directly out of the box the differences between the two are minor. A side by side comparison might show some difference. But for me that takes the CZ one day and the Beretta another I would not say that they feel different enough to make a truly noticable difference. Put a scale on the two guns and likely there will be a difference. I'm willing to bet that the difference between two stock guns is under a 16 oz difference for the SA pull.
