Hey guys,

I'm going to try and keep everyone nameless in this thread but I'm sure you'll get the idea. I live in the Toronto Ontario area and recently purchased an Excalibur Crossbow from a certain large outdoors store. Total package with all the fixings and a few extras I threw into the cart cost me a cool $1000. I could have went cheaper but when I shoot at an animal my main goal is to kill it FAST so its not in pain for long.

Anyways, I notice there is something inside the scope obstructing my view of the crosshairs. I called the store and spoke with a guy in the archery department and he said by all means bring it in and they will replace the scope. So today off I go to the store and waited 20 minutes for someone to come help me. I finally called customer service and told them I'm waiting in archery for help and no one is here. She connected me to a manager whom brought someone over 10 minutes later. This guy then went off for another 10 minutes or so looking for the archery guy. The archery guy was no where to be found. Anyways this guy didn't want to replace the scope, he made it very clear and he complained to me that he was pulled from a safety course. He then called the manager that brought him over and the manager told him to replace the scope. So he started removing my defective scope and I went looking at more goodies to buy while he was doing that. Then we went into the range to sight it in. When I picked up the crossbow low and behold the line was in this scope. I said "Hey thats not the new scope, thats the old scope". He said "Well I shook it and the line went away so I figured it was ok". He then put the new scope on and I watched him this time and we sighted it in. After everything was done I left and called the manager to tell him about this scam the guy tried to pull on me. I explained I was concerned that if I got a deer in my sights and that defective line threw my aim off I could wound a deer rather than killing it causing the deer to be in pain for a long time until it died of bleeding, infection or Yotes. The manager was outraged and offered me a $50 gift card. I accepted. However I'm still getting the feeling that this isn't suitable compensation for what just happened and the risk this employee was putting on an animal's life. In fact I dont even think there is a money value on something like that with me.

Am I over reacting/over-caring? What would you do or how would you react?

Sorry for the long winded rant.

I think the $50 is a very nice gesture by the manager. They are only obligated to replace the defective scope. As for the guy who gave you the gears I'm sure he'll hear about it.

Buy some stuff with your $50 card, and then avoid buying anything from a certain large outdoors store.;)

I don't think your blowing this out of proportion at all. Its nice to see somebody give a hoot about wildlife, whether you are out to kill it or not. A clean kill is the most important part of hunting.

To the guy that says "boo hoo", damn buddy, you'll get yours in your next life. This is a matter of getting what you paid for. It was not left at the discretion of the employee to fix it, he was to REPLACE IT. To which he didn't. If it were me, I'd write a letter or at least go back and make sure that the employee was dealt with properly.

Than agian, that's coming from a vegetarian, oil patch working, muti-handgun owning, BAD ASS hollow point shooting dude from Alberta.

you got a new scope, take your $50, get some stuff, and then next time go to a hunting shop that gives real customer service

my boo hoo was showing the level of pity I feel for someone who shops at Bass Pro Shops, Wholesale, etc, and expects great service.

Why don't you fire off an email to Bill and Cathy Trobridge. I hear they are very nice people who really care about their products. They might be interested in your story. You can find their company info on the net. Might as well go to the top, instead of dealing with a faceless company.

The dufus that tried to pull the wool over your eyes probably got his reward after you were oout of earshot.

On the ethical side - There's some people that consider crossbow hunting itself to be unethical and unfair to the quarry. It was not allowed at all in AB for many years. Its all in your perspective.

Todbartel is right, these big box stores just don't have the customer service most of us would like to see... Likely the employee got a blast when you left. Lucky you noticed the problem with the scope before you went hunting...

Cheers

I think you are over reacting it sounds like you are pissed at the manager and the whole store.I can see why you would be mad about the service from the archery guy but you let the manager know and if he cares about bussiness he will probably do something about it.the 50 bucks was a bonus and I don't think you should be entitled to any compensation at all.

I don't think you have a legitimate point with the fact that this could wound a deer.If it was throwing your shot off you definatly would have known.you sound like an ethical hunter with a great deal of respect for your animals.if you are that concerned with letting animals suffer I am sure you have spents many hours practicing with that crossbow.many hours of practice should have let you know if it was throwing your shot off.
