Hi,

So I have a dilemma... and I was hoping for some input...

I have a .223 that I use here in Kingston for shooting to 600yds with the ORA...

As it is right now... It has a Savage Model 12 action with accutrigger, a Bell and Carlson Medalist stock (bedding block, synthetic) that I've added an adjustable cheek rest on... the LOP is a bit short for me, but I've been making due... and in front of it all is a Shilen Stainless select match barrel... 1/8, 26" long...

I decided I wanted to upgrade the action to a Savage LRPV target action... it took a while, but I finally found one in Canada (what an ordeal!!!)... so I packed everything up and sent it in to get the action swapped... The stock would need to have one action screw hole added, and another modified... and the recoil lug area widened before being re-bedded...

The action is a large shank! It doesn't fit the barrel... :kickInTheNuts:

The rifle as is shoots just fine... I'm still looking for the perfect load... but does just fine... the action is blue and the barrel is stainless...

My options now are:

1) Give up... keep the fully functional rifle that I have... even though the stock isn't perfect... but I know it and it works... sell the action on the EE and move on...

2) Sell the rifle I have now to fund a new barrel and a new stock... essentially giving me a new rifle... but the barrel order time is 16 weeks... cutting into this summer's shooting season... I may not have a functional rifle (load development, fire forming, etc) until as late as June or July... With this option, I would get a nice new stock that would be measured and fit to me...

3) Just order a new barrel... keep the stock... this would solve the shank size problem... but not the stock fit one... I could upgrade stocks later...

4) Sell the rifle I have now... and the action... and start fresh... I see PGW has nice .308 barreled actions for sale... I could abandon the .223 (although it's a great round for 600 yds... easy on the shoulder... cheap to make... I already have everything I need for reloading)

I am so indecisive... I've been flopping back and forth between option 1 and 2 for a week... and 4 just became a possibility the other day....

What would you guys do?

The other option is to shoot what you have now, get the barrel and stock ordered for the new rifle. Once the new one is built then sell the old to recoup your funds.

That way you have a gun to shoot while you wait for components and build time.

Adding a spacer to the butt will solve the LOP problem. A gunsmith could cut the small shank off your barrel then rethread and rechamber it.
You could get a new barrel fitted to the new action and continue to shoot what you have for the time being. Once the barrel action comes back get it put into the old stock. Sell the old barreled action once the new one is fitted to the stock or find another stock and have a back up rifle.

As I do believe I have seen you shoot your .223 at Kingston, it works just fine so keep it as the others suggest and build another rig for next year.

I would not change your 223 if it shooting good, it certainly sounds good. Then again I would not have thought of upgrading to a target action from the model 12 action. I would have sent the action you had to a reputable smith for trueing.

Now that I am pretending to be you, I would use that action to build a custom .260.

Bear in mind that I know nothing these are just my imaginary machinations.
