I'm looking for a bit of advice regarding a Cooey 82 trainer. Someone in the past had stained the stock with a reddish stain, it looks like something you would use on your deck at home. I am thinking of cleaning the stain off to the bare wood and giving it an oil finish. I'm hoping lacquer thinner will remove most of it so there is very little sanding to do. Other than that it looks to be in very good condition. Should I do it or just leave it as is? The stock seems to have a nice grain to it from the little I can see. I don't want to do anything that may hurt it down the road. Any suggestions?
 
Is it an original finish? If its been redone once then I wouldn't hesitate to take a second stab at it to take it back to a more natural look.

I have no idea how collectable one of those are but if its that butt-ugly you will enjoy it much more if something is done to improve its looks. Is there any chance of finding a replacement stock if it is an original finish thats worth preserving?
 
Use that Circa stain/finish remover product.
They make a couple different formulas.
Make sure you follow the directions as it can
be tough on the hide.
 
Its not the original finish, someone had redone it at one point, but it doesn't look right since the stain is a solid red color and hides almost all the grain in the wood.

Heres a pic of mine. Actually this pic makes the wood look better than it looks in person to me.Mine also doesn't have the peep sight, thats something I'd like to find for it one day as well.

It looks better in the pic than when your holding it, the fella did an ok job on it but its just the color I don't care for. If I get bored I may strip it down and give it an oil finish.
 
has the metals been stamped with the Canadian arrow as well as the stock? if not it may just be a model 82 which were sold out of Sears and Eatons as well as many other outlets. I have seen many full wood 82s which were never used as a military trainer and never had a peep sight, just the rear barrel sight. so if it is not a marked trainer, i suggest you try to get the finish you want.
 
No it doesn't have the C75 on it either, I think this was one of the civilian 82's that became available, overall it seems to be in pretty good shape.
