Ok, so i've got all the parts I need to put my rifle together (a savage model 12 if it matters) The rings are "low" rings and i have a weaver 20 moa rail. i put it all together and need to slide the scope back farther so I am in a more comfortable shooting position. My question is should I get taller rings and have a little bit more adjustment or should i trim the rail and gain upto "3/4 which would be a much wider range of movement. The problem is the rail is more expensive then the rings but trimming it gets me the most adjustment then using taller rings... What should i do?
 
I'm a little slower than most. Are you doing this for clearance between the bell of the scope and the rail?
If height is where you want it, trim the rail.
 
I already have to pad the stock. I would just like the scope farther back in a more comfortable shooting position
 
If the bell is hitting the front of the rail and the height is where you want it, then trim the rail as 9x19p said or get another rail and sell the one you have.
 
Liking my scope as low as possible, I trimmed an EGW rail to get a Bushnell 10X40 back far enough for my needs. I touched it up with some aluminum black. Super crappy finish but it looked fine if you didn't touch it otherwise it might as well been soot from a candle. Even oil would rub it off... Did the trick though.
