I am looking for a waterfowling semi-auto shotgun that can take some extreme abuse. My current shotgun (Benelli Nova) has taken it's fair share of punishment. I have lost it over the canoe once, used it as a paddle, it is always covered in mud, and often gets pounded by salt water surf.

I do like walnut stocks, but would synthetic be better??

I really like the Beretta Xtrema2 but I can't picture myself putting a $1600 gun through this kind of abuse...

Which would you choose?

Edit to add Benelli SBE II but it is a little over what I want to spend...(Not in Poll)

Minor Hijack...

All of the above shotguns are gas-driven correct?
How are gas-driven shotguns these days?? Do they all require rubber gasket replacement/checking ala Remington 1100??

Thanks.

P.S. The Beretta looks the best and would be what I want, but cost is definitely up there. The Winchester and Browning are tied (I'd be happy with either in synthetic furniture).

New gas-operated shotguns are way ahead of the older style o-rings of the 1100/11-87 making them much more reliable. No more having to take extra o-rings with you, or having one fail when you need it most.

I've owned a Beretta 391 and loved it. I've also owned a few winchesters pumps and liked them as well. I always hate using my wood stock shotguns for waterfowl hunting. I would buy the Beretta myself with a synthetic stock, but it should really come down to fit of the shotgun for you. Some people don't like the palm swell of the xtrema.

You have neglected to put the King of the Water fowling guns in your poll... The Super Black Eagle II!
Why? They are the undisputed champion for taking abuse and still functioning flawlessly ... the inertia action is virtually foolproof. The SBEII has many features that make it a first choice over the others you list. Chryo barrels and choke tubes really keep the muzzle jump down and make it the fastest for follow up shots. And the Comfortech stack and gel pads make it very comfortable to shoot for a lightweight shotgun.
I can tell you first hand that both the Winchesters and the Brownings will fail after a while without cleaning the gas system. I had to reblue my Browning Gold 3.5 after one season. And they recoil harder and the muzzle climb is much worse than the Benelli.
The only other semi auto Water fowling gun that I put in the same class as the SBEII is the Beretta Extrema II with the Kickoff system. It is the softest recoiling 3.5" shotgun made and cycles flawlessly with very little maintenance the only downside is the gun is heavy and a little slower to shoulder and swing compared to the SBEII.

While I believe a synthetic stock is your best choice I still voted for the Browning Silver Walnut. I like wood.

I mainly shoot pistols. I've got a Colt Gold Cup and it wears a nice set of wood grips. I have rubber grips for it that improve my control on the gun but I went to the wood because it looked so good.

Fully concur with BIGREDD....depending on gun fit....solid long term investment would be a Benelli SBE II, M2 or the Beretta.

I have an Extrema 1 and its a great gun. The brownings and winchesters are really kinda copying what beretta has been doing for several years. I would try a SBE2 and an Extrema2 for fit and swing (they fit quite different) and go with one of those two. They both are PROVEN extreme usage guns.

If you want a gun that will take the same abuse as your Nova, get a SBE. I have had a few different ones and all have performed flawlessly. And I am not one to baby or take care of stuff much.

And if it is a wet, muddy and bloody waterfowl killer, get synthetic.

A used Benelli M1 Field (M1S90) can be had around $1200 or so. I have one and I also have the Beretta Xtrema2. Xtrema for low recoil (after eye surgery) and M1 for the most reliable cycling and long shooting reliability of upland and skeet shooting. :)

concur with BIGREDD fully.

Cheers
