I'm looking for a shootgun that I will carry(unloaded of course) in my ATV storage box when going up north. I've never done that before but with the amount of forest fires we had lately, there has been a number of reports about bears coming out for food among other animals...

I did see some LEO and Forest Rangers last time I went. both agreed that a shotgun would not be an issue and is definitaly a good idea.

The easy solution owuld be to bring a restricted toy but that wont happen. I dont want trouble.

It will be minimum required lenght to be legit of course(18 inch canon, 26 total).

It wont be shiny, it'll be bouced around, it'll be scratched(even if carried in a protective sleeve). I need this to be dead reliable if I ever need it(pick up, load 2-3 rounds and use only IF very necessary). I'll do my best to make sure it's protected from dust and the elements of course but you never know.

I'm thinking about a 870 Express with a pistol grip or something along those lines. I'm sure I can find a used one for cheap still in good shape mechanically but has seen better days for estethics.

Any other suggestions?

A 14" Norinco HP9-1.

i put a 12.5" barrel from Dlask on my 870. fits in ATV boxes, under the seat in my helicopter, easy to carry....

and it's Canadian made (unlike the norinco/dominion POS)

My Remington 870 Express with a Dlask barrel did not compare favorably with the Norinco HP9-1. The HP9-1 models are much more similar to my 870 Police and 870 Wingmaster models than is the economy Express model. I considered the 870 Express to be the POS in the group, which is also why I dumped it. YMMV

If I had a choice of the above models, the 870 Express would be the last choice.

If you ask me they are all cheap pump guns especially the "chi-com" model.

Lol how do you figure that? The man asked what he should carry out into the woods for overall genereal use/bear protection and will be carried on an atv..... How would this belong in a tactical thread?

Anyways to answer your question, pretty much any pump shotgun will do what you need. All kinds of heavy hard hitting loads and all sorts of stock/barrel types to custom fit your needs and parts are easy to find. I would personally choose any of the 870 variations or the mossberg pumps.

He is asking about a gun intended for defense use not sporting or hunting applications.

The longest serving moderator of the shotgun forums recommends defense questions of any type be put in the black and green forum.

If you have a question about useing your gun related to hunting post it in there if it is about defence against somethine two or four leged or what have you post it in the black/green.
It is not what the gun is,it is what the gun is used for.
