Another vote for 30-06.
Yes, it has a touch more energy than the .308. A touch less accurate? Pffft! That has far more to do with the rifles or the ammunition used than it does the caliber.
But a touch more energy, yes. And it'll handle the 180 grainers and 200 grainers for moose more than just a "touch" better.

30-06 is your best bet.

Ya, I have to agree with "Huntin", two rifles in the same chambering.:confused:
Why not scope a rifle that has iron sights and an integral scope mount system like a CZ, or a Ruger etc. Then you could have two rifles to cover a larger range
of possible situations, in both game type and shot distances. Like a 6.5x55 and a 9.3x62, as an example.
 
I had a rem mod 700 bdl in 300win mag that I used for moose and whitetail in ontario. I ended up selling it and bought a tikka t3 lite ss in 30/06 because I wanted a lighter, weather resistant that could be used for moose & whitetail. IMHO 30/06 is the perfect multi purpose big game cartridge for Ontario hunters. If I only hunted moose then I would of stuck with a 300 win mag, but 30/06 is more versatile, cheaper to shoot, and has a little less recoil, making putting a scope on and off easier, and cheaper to constanty rescope.

If you did some target shooting also, then a .308 would be a better choice, but if your using the gun for hunting, then 30/06 is perfect. A 30/06 firing 180 gr bullet will drop a moose @300 yards if you hit the sweet spot so a 300 win mag is overkill since a 500 yard shot in ontario isnt likely........even 200 yards is a difficult shot from a standing position.

I use my scoped 30/06 for moose and deer when im in a treestand and can take a long shot. When im pushing the bush for deer, I use a cz858 open sights firing 7.62x39 because most shots at a deer are under 75 yards then.
 
You didn't say if any of your hunting would be below the .270 line in Ontario.

If it will be North of that, I'd take the 308. If below, I'd go .270, or short mag equivalent.

Reasoning, depending on where you hunt in Northern Ontario, the ranges can be very much in your face, or stretch way out there. In southern Ontario, ranges are generally very long.

If you're just hunting from your camp, tight quarters, the 45-70 will be excellent, so will the 30-30, but the 308 will do just as well, and it has that reach out and touch for the long range shots as well.

Fogduckers place, I'd take the 308, or anything with long range capability, 270, 30-06, 338wm.. he has a long range there.
 
My "go to" is a Rem. 7600 in 35 Whelen with a VX-II in 1-4x in Leupold XLow QR mounts.
The factory 7600 sights remain. If the lower tier of Ontario is a factor, I'd look at the same set-up in a 270.

I've never used or felt the need for the open sights. I usually leave the scope set at about the 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 mark ... with the low mounting, non-critical eye relief and big field of view, I've never found deer or moose on the move to be an issue, and if you get the chance for a standing shot, turning up to 4x can be advantageous. Works for me !
 
Presently, for big game I can take a scoped bolt 30-06, a peep sight 30-30, or a 12/308 scoped Brno combo.
The Brno is still my goto gun. Consider the combo. The most versatile option by far, esp when a grouse pops up on a slow hunting day.
 
.338 Federal. Great shooter out to 350 yards with 160-200 grain pills. Deadly inside 100 yards with 200-250 grain pills :)

Tikka Battue Lite for iron sights

Ruger SS Hawkeye for scoped.
