What would you pay for castable lead (UPDATE POST #45)

Unfortunately for us here in Canada, Canada Post does not offer a flat rate like the USPS does. I had my 40 lb box of linotype shipped from a US ebayer to my US shipping address for $10.00, because it fit in the $10 flat rate box.

I sent 50 lbs linotype from Vancouver to a Calgary address via Greyhound and they charged my buyer $87.00. I guess that exhorbitant shipping cost was acceptable to the buyer because he needed the lino.

I used to ship by Greyhound but not in the last 10years. There is something wrong with company that would sell the ticket to a 250lbs person for less than $87 for the same distance....
Two weeks ago I did send CGN member 47lbs of linotype+2lbs of 50/50 solder from Kamloops to Victoria by Canada Post regular package for $31.26. Eat that Greyhound!

yep, you guys are right, my apologies as the confusion is all on my end. Even managed to get it wrong twice in a row, not bad for a guy dealing with that nearly everyday... its amazing how much a messed up thyroid can screw with a persons brain and the new med the past month has been the worse so far.

Will keep CP in mind for next shipment, if ever. I am low on lino and will probably keep my remaining stock.

Well, official word came down today, and it was not favourable. No reasons were given, but the answer was a firm "NO" you cannot have any lead. So, sorry to say, no cheap lead for all you fellas either. It is a bit of a kick in the nuts, and I am not sure why they are being so obstinate, but I am not going to fight it.

You would most likely need a licence to meet the hospitals insurance needs .. So check into those costs .. May have to give up a weekend and write a test to be approved. Province may fee you for the course and yearly .. So consider that also.

Sucks to give up on 1000lbs of lead ... Gray gold .......

That is too bad Red Herring.
Maybe you will be able to get enough lead from the recycler that has the contract to keep you in bullets.
I was hoping you would be successful as I have a brother in Victoria who could deliver for me.

Ya. Would have been ~2500 lbs per year of the same hardness as wheel weights for less than $.25/lb.

Out of curiosity, what licence were you thinking I might need? Hazmat?

I have a line in 5-6000 lbs of castable lead scrap. BHL of 13-15. @ $.75/lb.

I was only in the market for a couple of hundred pounds........

It's currently out in the elements, covered in a snow pile, but I am expecting a call once it thaws.....

Ok so you have to deal with the middle man ( the scrap guy who has the contract now), make a deal with him for bulk buys of that lead only, he doesn't have to wait for a buyer just sell direct to you in bulk for double the cash, still cheap and prob close to what you were gonna give the hospital!! There is more than one way to skin a cat,,,but they are all good! If I can find a relatively cheap way to get it here I would take a few hundred pounds off your hands!

May not be a licence, might just be the hospitals legal system concerned about liability and safe end use (i.e. proper storage, work practices, etc). Often vendors have to be pre-screened and get on an "approved" list which covers everything from safe work practices to financial stability. Hospital does not want the potential risk of being liable for many thousands of pounds of lead stored in someone's garage or a warehouse that could be abandonded at some point of time.

If anyone is keeping a list of people for lead ingot, put me down for a 1000 lbs supply. Anywhere between 10 and 15 BHN is fine for me. If someone manages to get a good bulk supply of suitable lead ingot for Alberta, I'm in. I've already got a local tire shop willing to keep me in the loop on w/w supply now. Managed about 60 lbs in my last batch.
